  • Patent number: 4473378
Abstract: Compounds that are themselves effective cetane improvers in diesel fuel but are considered too explosion sensitive for safe handling can be rendered relatively nonsensitive by blending with C.sub.5 to C.sub.12 alkyl nitrates and the resulting blend is an effective cetane improver. An example is a 50--50 blend of 2-methyl-2-nitropropyl nitrate, a shock-sensitive compound, with isooctyl nitrate to give a relatively insensitive but very effective cetane improver.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 28, 1983
Date of Patent: September 25, 1984
    Assignee: Ethyl Corporation
Inventors: John V. Hanlon, James B. Hinkamp
  • Patent number: 4448587
Abstract: The cetane rating of diesel fuel is increased by addition of a small amount of the synergistic combination of (a) an alkyl-nitrate (e.g. octyl nitrates) and (b) the nitrate ester of an alkoxylated alcohol (e.g. ethoxyethyl nitrate).
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 28, 1983
Date of Patent: May 15, 1984
    Assignee: Ethyl Corporation
Inventors: James B. Hinkamp, John V. Hanlon
  • Patent number: 4417903
Abstract: The cetane number of diesel fuel is increased by the addition of an aliphatic hydrocarbyl nitro nitrate additive such as 2-methyl-2-nitro-1-propanol nitrate (ester).
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 15, 1982
Date of Patent: November 29, 1983
    Assignee: Ethyl Corporation
    Inventor: James B. Hinkamp
  • Patent number: 4336033
Abstract: An improved fuel composition comprising a major amount of hydrocarbons boiling in the gasoline boiling range, and a minor amount of iron pentacarbonyl capable of improving the octane number rating of the composition but insufficient to cause excessive wear in engine parts when the fuel composition is burned in an internal combustion engine.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 11, 1981
Date of Patent: June 22, 1982
    Assignee: Ethyl Corporation
    Inventor: James B. Hinkamp
