Patent number: 6972087Abstract: A filter (10) for filtering debris out of the fluid in a transmission sump (S) prior to the fluid entering a transmission pump (P) is disclosed. The filter (10) includes a filter housing (12) presenting a filter inlet (30), a bypass inlet (32), and an outlet (46). Filter media (14) is disposed in the housing (12) such that fluid flowing from the filter inlet (30) to the outlet (46) passes through the media (14) and fluid flows from the bypass inlet (32) to the outlet (46) without passing through the media (14). A bypass valve assembly (16), shiftable into and out of a closed position, prevents fluid flow through the bypass inlet (32) when the valve (16) is closed.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 2003Date of Patent: December 6, 2005Assignee: SPX CorporationInventors: James B. Wolford, Mitch Kujawski, Morgan Bullard, John E. Szydlo, Yakov Sarnov

Patent number: 6782917Abstract: An anti-drainback apparatus for a filter used in a vehicle transmission, allows fluid to keep the transmission pump primed when the engine is turned off. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a seal disposed in a neck member of the filter at its outlet, and a body having slanted sides, and a platform base. The body is disposed in the neck member such that the slanted sides of the body abut the seal, and the platform base covers the opening of the neck member, preventing fluid from draining back from the pump into the sump when the engine is turned off. Thus, the body is movable from an unsealed position which allows fluid flow to the transmission when the engine is turned on, and the sealed position which prevents fluid drainback into the filter when the engine is turned off.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 2001Date of Patent: August 31, 2004Assignee: SPX CorporationInventors: James B. Wolford, Joseph A. Geisler, Mitchell Kujawski
