  • Patent number: 8354793
Abstract: A lighting system distinguishes between light from natural and manmade sources to prevent the system's light source from being inadvertently deactivated due to light received from manmade light sources. A sensor converts received light into electrical energy. The system light source and/or some other external light source can emit light with a modulation. The system includes a modulation detector that can detect the modulation in the electrical energy received from the sensor. A system controller selectively adjusts the flow of electrical energy to the system light source responsive to the electrical signals from the sensor. The controller adjusts the flow of electrical energy in response to the non-modulated component of the electrical signals from the sensor. The controller does not adjust the flow of electrical energy in response to the modulated component of the electrical signals from the sensor.

  • Publication number: 20090164174
Abstract: A method of operating an electrical appliance includes coupling a solar collector to the electrical appliance such that the solar collector may provide electrical power to the appliance. A global positioning system receiver is used to determine a location of the solar collector. A level of power that may be sourced by the solar collector is calculated wherein the calculation is dependent upon the location of the solar collector as determined by the global positioning system receiver. The appliance is configured to draw a level of power corresponding to the calculated level of power that may be sourced by the solar collector.

  • Publication number: 20090059573
Abstract: A solid-state lighting device for illuminating a predetermined area having a width and length includes a reflector having at least one cavity. At least one edge emitting solid-state light-emitting device is positioned relative to the cavity of the reflector. The cavity includes an inner curved surface terminating at an edge proximate the solid-state light-emitting device. The inner curved surface has a curvature such that a light intensity of the device has a sharp drop-off in intensity at a boundary of the width and a slowly attenuating light at a boundary of the length.

  • Publication number: 20060152928
Abstract: A solid-state lighting array for illuminating a predefined area includes a support member. A plurality of solid-state light-emitting devices is supported on the support member so that each device projects an essentially circular pattern of illumination onto the predefined area. At least a portion of the plurality of light-emitting devices is disposed so as to project a beam of light onto the predefined area at an oblique angle. The portion of obliquely angled devices have an astigmatic lens associated therewith so that the pattern of illumination incident upon the surface of the predefined area is essentially circular.

  • Publication number: 20050251872
Abstract: The present invention provides new lentiviral vectors, including lentiviral transfer plasmids and infectious lentiviral particles. Lentiviral vectors of the invention were designed to offer a number of desirable features including reduced size, convenient cloning sites (including multiple cloning sites and sites for particularly useful restriction enzymes), loxP sites, self-inactivating LTRs, etc. Certain of the vectors are optimized for expression of reporter genes and/or for expression of siRNAs or shRNAs within eukaryotic cells. The invention also provides three and four plasmid lentiviral expression systems. In addition, the invention provides a variety of methods for using the vectors including gene silencing in cells and transgenic animals, and methods of treating disease.

  • Patent number: 6032680
Abstract: An apparatus and method for retaining hair is disclosed. The apparatus includes a flexible member having a latching section and a band section. The band section includes a ridge portion and the latching section includes one or more teeth for selectively engaging with the ridge portion. The apparatus also includes a decorative sleeve for covering the band section. In operation, the band section can be wrapped around the group of hair and positioned with the latching section so that the one or more teeth engage with the ridge portion of the band section and thereby secure the band section into a loop around the hair.

  • Patent number: 5827107
Abstract: A spinning figurine toy has a weighted skirt or disc to provide angular momentum, a lower spindle, a spring attached to the lower spindle, a foot inserted into the lower end of the spring, and a rod fixed in the foot and able to move vertically within the lower spindle. When the toy is spun upon the foot, bouncing or jumping motion may be imparted to the toy by dropping it from a height because of the resilient nature of the spring. A pull-string operated hand launcher having a helical spindle on top fits into a corresponding helical aperture in the foot to provide a means of setting the toy in motion at high speed and of releasing it.

  • Patent number: 5738560
Abstract: A sound producing amusement device comprising an inflatable member made of an elastic resilient material, and a handle for supporting and manipulating the inflatable member. A member placed inside the inflatable member produces sound as it rolls or moves inside the inflatable member. The handle is provided with a slot for receiving the open end of the inflatable member for retention and sealing thereof within the handle. Different forms of members placed within the inflatable member produce different sounds, and can simulate different vehicles, animals, etc.

  • Patent number: 5544903
Abstract: A flexible, low friction, rideable sliding toy is disclosed that slides over relatively smooth, firm surfaces with very low friction. The toy is comprised of a bag of flexible, air impermeable material having one or more relatively large holes cut out of the bottom of the bag where the bag contacts the floor when in use. The bag is inflated by allowing it to drop onto the floor, trapping air inside it as it lands. The outer edges of the hole form a relatively airtight seal allowing the bag to retain its inflated state when laid upon by a user, thus permitting a user to propel himself over fiat surfaces in a low friction manner. A flap of material may be affixed inside the bag positioned so that it lies loosely over the large holes, providing a seal when the bag leaks unduly.

  • Patent number: 5349457
Abstract: Novel fiber optic telephone loop networks are disclosed. In the networks, single mode fiber optics are used for feeder and distribution segments of the loop but multimode fiber optics are used for the drops. The use of the multimode fiber optics has permitted the use of less costly optoelectronic devices. Surface light emitting diodes are such economical but reliable parts. Fiber service terminals located near subscriber premises convert single mode operation to the multimode operation. The networks are relatively easy to install and upgrade and are very economically competitive with other known FTTC and FTTH schemes. In a further embodiment, the fiber service terminals have microprocessor control to reroute signals via redundant single mode connections to central switching office in the event of a fault in a single mode fibers.
