Publication number: 20040076528Abstract: The present invention, in one form, is a fuel pump having increased pump inlet suction and outlet pressures as compared to known fuel pumps. Such pressure increases enable use of one fuel pump even with an engine including multiple cylinder banks, and facilitates elimination of vapor and air bubbles in the fuel. The fuel pump also does not include small, or narrow passages that are prone to be clogged by dirt or the like. More specifically, and in one embodiment, the fuel pump includes a pump housing including an inlet and an outlet. An inlet nozzle extends from the inlet, and -an outlet nozzle extends from the outlet. The inlet nozzle is configured to be coupled to a fuel line extending from a fuel tank, and the outlet nozzle is configured to be coupled to a fuel line extending to the engine block. The pump further includes first and second pump inlet covers. Each cover includes an air nozzle.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 24, 2003Publication date: April 22, 2004Applicant: PILLSBURY WINTHROP LLPInventors: Richard P. Kolb, David Hartke, James C. Kantola

Patent number: 6644250Abstract: The present invention includes a distribution manifold for evenly distributing engine oil to the cylinders of an internal combustion engine, as well as, directing oil and purging any air accompanying the oil through the fuel system of an internal combustion engine. The manifold includes a plurality of cylinder oiling outlet housings, each having a number of cylinder oiling valves corresponding to the number of cylinders in an internal combustion engine. The distribution manifold has a centrally-located dome in fluid communication with the cylinder oiling outlet housings. Extending from the apex of the dome is a fuel system outlet housing also having an oiling valve to regulate the flow of oil to the fuel system. A notch extends along the upper interior surface of the centrally-located dome in fluid communication with the fuel system outlet housing.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2000Date of Patent: November 11, 2003Assignee: Bombardier Motor Corporation of AmericaInventors: James C. Patent number: 6435146Abstract: The present invention includes an oiling distribution system having an oil distribution manifold for evenly distributing engine oil to the cylinders of an internal combustion engine and an adapter base for coupling to the oil distribution manifold having therein an air purging passage for purging any air accompanying the oil exiting an oil pumping system. The air purging passage discharges air to the oil distribution manifold wherein the air is transported to the fuel system of an internal combustion engine through a fuel system oiling outlet. The air purging passage has an air inlet and air outlet that are sufficient size to allow the transport of air but minimize the flow of oil through the air purging passage. The present invention also provides a method for purging air from an oiling system.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 2000Date of Patent: August 20, 2002Assignee: Bombardier Motor Corporation of AmericaInventors: James C. Patent number: 6378472Abstract: An isolation valve and regulator assembly is disclosed for use in a lubrication system of an outboard marine engine. The valve is used to inject and regulate oil flow into the fuel system of the outboard marine engine. The regulating valve has a housing with an inlet to receive a first hose and an outlet to receive a second hose wherein the first and second hoses are non-interchangeable. Since the construction of the valve requires different sized inlet and outlet hoses, reverse installation is prevented. A passage between the inlet and the outlet includes a check valve for allowing fluid flow in only one direction. A regulating nozzle is provided that works in conjunction with the check valve to inject and regulate lubrication flow.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 2000Date of Patent: April 30, 2002Assignee: Bombardier Motor Corporation of AmericaInventor: James C. Patent number: 5700168Abstract: A shift interrupt apparatus for a marine drive of the type which has an ignition system and a transmission that is adapted to be selectively shifted among forward, neutral and reverse operating positions. A control member is provided for selectively positioning the transmission of the drive into forward, neutral and reverse operating positions. The apparatus has a light circuit associated with a mechanical assembly adapted to detect excessive shifting force, which generates an electrical signal for interrupting the ignition to facilitate easier shifting.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1996Date of Patent: December 23, 1997Assignee: Outboard Marine CorporationInventors: Martin J.
