  • Publication number: 20040130407
Abstract: A DC-block includes a capacitor incorporated into a conductor, such as a center conductor of a coaxial structure. The DC block provides low insertion loss at high frequencies, and a low cutoff frequency. The small physical size and high capacitance of the DC block provides for a high self-resonant frequency and ultra-broadband performance.

  • Patent number: 6359896
Abstract: The invention provides techniques for selecting, on a dynamic basis, an interworking function (IWF) that can modify a communication protocol to a particular format required by bridged terminal equipment in a communication system. The IWF can be selected to ensure compatibility between transmission bandwidth, coding and other format parameters of a call and the corresponding parameters of its destination terminal in the system. An IWF in accordance with the invention may be utilized to allow a user to bind to different terminals having different capabilities over the duration of a given call. An IWF in accordance with the invention may also be used to insert additional data, retrieved from a database of the switch, into a reverse portion of the call directed from the destination terminal to the source terminal. The invention can thus be used to ensure that the established bandwidth between the destination terminal and the source terminal is substantially bidirectionally symmetric.

  • Patent number: 6295456
Abstract: The invention provides dynamic binding and bridging between a mobile terminal and other more complex terminals in a communication system. In an illustrative embodiment, a temporary association is established, in a memory of a system switch, between the mobile and at least one other system terminal. While the mobile is “registered” in this manner to the other terminal, the mobile user can request permission to utilize the functions of the other terminal in order to, for example, receive incoming calls or place outgoing calls. The temporary association may be established based on a determination of the proximity of the mobile to the other terminal, such that the mobile registers to different complex system terminals as it moves between different cells of the system. The invention also provides techniques which allow users to access a user-defined profile for one terminal at another terminal of the system.

  • Patent number: 6058482
Abstract: An apparatus, method and system are disclosed for providing network security for executable code in computer and communications networks, such as providing network security for downloadable and executable Java programming language bytecode. The preferred apparatus embodiment includes a network interface for the reception and transmission of network information, such as an interactive world wide web page; and includes a processor having program instructions to determine whether network information includes a network language keyword, such as a Java applet. When the network information includes such a network language keyword, the processor includes further instructions is further responsive to generate the network language keyword having a distinctive reference to corresponding executable code, such as a distinctive Java class name, and to provide, for transmission by the network interface, the network information in which the network language keyword incorporates the distinctive reference.

  • Patent number: 5953005
Abstract: A method and system for providing access to multimedia content on-line which is updated virtually simultaneously with the vendor's update process. By a user accessing a page on the World Wide Web, for example, data (encrypted and unencrypted) and instructions are automatically downloaded to a user's computer system for quick access. Depending upon the user's computer system (LAN or a stand-alone personal computer), "applets" containing data and instructions are stored for immediate access. In a Karaoke application of this invention, where the user desires to access songs which are most popular at a given time, the user accesses a page where a song list and other information is displayed on a display apparatus. When the user clicks on a particular song of the song list, the applet executes an authentication request. If the user is authenticated, the authentication is downloaded as part of the applet containing the desired multimedia content (or separately depending upon the circumstances).

  • Patent number: 5340985
Abstract: A dosimeter for use in mixed radiation fields is disclosed. The dosimeter consisting of a single element may be used in a photon-neutron field if the energies of the photons and neutrons are known. In a mixed photon-neutron-beta radiation field of unknown energies, a detector having four elements is sufficient to provide an estimate of the exposure. The dosimeter makes use of the high temperature readout from a 6Li doped LiF thermoluminescent detector to provide an estimate of both the neutron and photon exposures.

  • Patent number: 4991255
Abstract: A pneumatic door-closer includes a door-closer body pivoted to a generally L-shaped crank unit which is mounted pivotally on a support. The unit includes a long crank arm member and a short crank arm member, and can be adjusted to change the positions of the members relative to the support. The adjustable connection of the crank unit to the support enables the door-closer to work regardless of whether the left or the right side of the associated door is hinged to a door frame. The piston rod of the body has a right-hand screw portion engaged threadedly with a piston body, and a left-hand screw end portion engaged with a nut for retaining the piston body on the piston rod.

  • Patent number: 4817238
Abstract: A door-closer has an air cylinder in which a piston rod and a piston body are provided to define first and second sealed chambers. The piston body is sleeved movably on the piston rod and has a tapered bore which is communicated with the second chamber. A closable passage is formed through the piston and communicated with the first and second chambers. A spring-biased seal is disposed in the second chamber and biased to close the closable passage. A regulatable passage is formed through the piston body and communicated with the tapered bore and the first chamber. The piston rod has a shoulder which is movable axially within the tapered bore by rotating the cylinder relative to the piston rod for regulating the air flow between the first and second chambers through the regulatable passage. The spring-biased seal is movable to open the closable passage when the piston body moves in response to the opening of the door.
