  • Patent number: 6341552
Abstract: A self-calibrating method and system 10 for controlling a hydraulically operated device, such as a clutch actuator 24 in an automatic power transmission, provides a pressure switch 30 in the hydraulic circuit that provides feed-back to the controller 32 when the hydraulic fluid pressure has reached a set point level. Pressure switch 30 provides a signal to controller 32 that allows the controller to compare the control signal at the pressure set point level with that of the calibrated curve for adjusting the calibration curve.

  • Patent number: 6269827
Abstract: A variable force solenoid operated pressure control valve for controlling an hydraulically operated actuator in a fluid pressure circuit. The valve has a spool in a straight spool bore with fluid pressure chambers at opposite ends. One spool end has a rod press fitted therein with the rod extending through the fluid pressure chamber and operatively contacting the solenoid armature. The rod creates an area differential on the spool ends for providing an axial spool force proportional to the pressure in the fluid chambers which are each connected by a metering passage in the spool to a recess on the spool which is continuously connected to a control pressure port. A supply port is connected to the recess by a first valving land on the spool and an exhaust port is connected to the recess by a second valving land on the spool. The metering passages serve to attenuate transients.

  • Patent number: 5129500
Abstract: A control valve assembly has a multi-land spool valve slidably disposed in a stepped valve bore. One end of the spool valve has disposed adjacent thereto a control chamber in which a control signal pressure is selectively applied while the other end has a timing chamber disposed adjacent thereto which has the signal pressure selectively applied therein when the clutch is subjected to apply pressure. The timing chamber permits rapid clutch fill and controlled pressure rise of the clutch apply fluid during clutch engagement.

  • Patent number: 4896645
Abstract: A rotary distributor fuel pumping apparatus has a spill valve which is operable to terminate delivery of fuel by a cam actuated pumping plunger. The spill valve is operable by a first piston and a further piston is provided the extent of movement of which is limited by an adjustable stop. A further plunger is actuated in synchronism with the pumping plunger and supplies liquid to the cylinders containing the pistons. When during the inward movement of the plungers, the movement of the further piston is halted the first piston will move to open the spill valve to terminate delivery of fuel.

  • Patent number: 4874301
Abstract: A fuel pumping apparatus for supplying fuel to an internal combustion engine comprises a rotary distributor member mounting a pumping plunger slidable in a bore and moved inwardly to discharge fuel from the bore by cam lobes on the internal surface of a cam ring, the cam lobes acting on the plunger through a cam follower. A valve is provided which at a predetermined position during the inward movement of the plunger, is opened to lower the pressure in the bore and thereby to terminate fuel flow through an outlet. The valve is actuated by the cam lobes either from the cam follower or from the plunger.

  • Patent number: 4869462
Abstract: An electromagnetically operable valve comprises a valve member slidable in a bore in which there is a seating. The valve member is moved to the closed position by a solenoid having an armature. A tubular coupling member is secured to the armature and is connected to the valve member through an overtravel spring housed within the coupling member. The coupling member has a flange for engagement with a stop surface to limit the movement of the armature after the valve member has contacted the seating. A return spring is also housed within the coupling member.

  • Patent number: 4717118
Abstract: An electromagnetically operable valve has a valve member which is coupled to a generally rectangular plate-like armature. The armature is attracted towards the pole faces of an "E" core when a winding on the core is energized. The movement of the armature towards the core is determined by the abutment of parts of the armature with a stop plate and the movement of the armature away from the core by the abutment of parts of the armature with a spacer positioned between the stop plate and a housing.

  • Patent number: 4565319
Abstract: A fuel injection unit includes a body housing a high pressure fuel pump, the body having a stepped cylindrical portion 11 to which a nozzle head is attached by a cap nut having a skirt portion. A fuel supply port opens onto a step and located against the step is a ring member the surface of which presented to the step defines an annular recess. Inner and outer annular legs are defined by the recess and the inner leg engages the step and the outer leg has a clearance with the step, the clearance forming a filtration gap for fuel flowing to the supply port.

  • Patent number: 4540155
Abstract: A fluid control valve comprises a valve member movable in a bore in a valve body. The valve has a stem connected through a resilient member to the armature of an electromagnetic device. The travel of the armature is greater than the movement of the valve member, the additional movement of the armature causing flexure of the resilient member.

  • Patent number: 4526519
Abstract: A reciprocable plunger fuel injection pump includes a plunger mounted in a pump barrel. A spring abutment is secured to the plunger and is engaged by one end of a spring the other end of which engages a further spring abutment slidable about the barrel. The barrel is provided with transverse apertures which locate balls which are held in an operative position by the abutment. The balls can be engaged by a step on the plunger to limit the outward movement of the plunger.

  • Patent number: 4394972
Abstract: A fuel injection nozzle for supplying fuel to an internal combustion engine includes an outwardly opening valve member having a head which co-operates with a seating formed on a tubular member. The head is lifted from the seating to allow fuel flow to the assciated engine. The tubular member is also slidable within a bore and defines orifices which are exposed beyond the bore to allow fuel flow to the engine before the valve head is lifted from the seating. Improved atomization of the fuel at low pressure is therefore obtained.

  • Patent number: 4299542
Abstract: A fuel pumping apparatus includes a rotary distributor member including bores locating pump plungers. The plungers are engaged by shoes carrying rollers. An actuating member has a leading flank and a trailing flank and is movable along a path parallel to a tangent to the bore containing the distributor member. The leading flank is movable into the path of the rollers to impart inward movement to the rollers and the associated plungers. The position of the actuating member is adjustable to determine the amount of fuel pumped by the plungers.

  • Patent number: 4232644
Abstract: A fuel injection pumping apparatus includes a delivery valve interposed between the outlet of an injection pump and a plurality of outlet ports to which fuel is delivered in turn at successive delivery strokes of the injection pump. Communication with the outlet ports is established through a delivery passage and in order to minimize the loading of the spring which biases the delivery valve to the closed position, a branch passage is provided and which opens to an outlet port in advance of the communication with that outlet port of the main delivery passage. As a result some fuel flows through the branch passage the size of which in relation to the outlet port is such that fuel will be gradually diverted by way of the delivery valve and the main delivery passage during delivery of fuel. As a result the movement of the valve member of the delivery valve is less rapid and the stress on the spring is reduced.

  • Patent number: 4173959
Abstract: A fuel injection pumping apparatus for supplying fuel to an internal combustion engine includes an injection pump comprising a pair of reciprocable plungers located in a bore and moved inwardly in timed relationship by cam lobes formed on an annular cam ring. The bore containing the plungers is connected to a delivery passage whereby fuel is delivered in turn during successive inward movement of the plunger to a plurality of outlet ports. Fuel is supplied to the injection pump by way of valve means from a further pump, also incorporating a pair of reciprocable plungers movable inwardly by means of cam lobes on a cam ring. The displacement of the plungers of the further pumps is greater than that of the plungers of the injection pump and means is provided to alter the stroke of the plungers of the further pump during which fuel is supplied to the injection pump.
