    Abstract: A muffler-filter apparatus having a particulate trap using filter tubes with high temperature filter materials, like fiber in the form of yarn, woven yarn mat, or a non-woven, random array fiber mat, or various foams. Filter tubes have various structural configurations and are regenerated by axial propagation using ring heaters or stub rod heaters, by heating the entire length of the filter tube with a rod heater or some other full-length heater configuration. For regeneration, exhaust flow is bypassed using various valve configurations including a poppet valve, a shutter valve, or a tubular valve. Filter tube filters may also be self-regenerated by the heat from the exhaust gases as controlled by a throttle valve or on inclusion of fuel additives which lower particulate ignition temperature.

    Abstract: A poppet valve assembly is provided. The preferred poppet valve assembly comprises a valve seat, valve head member and actuation arrangement. In the preferred embodiment, the valve head member comprises a flexible seal member and backing member, oriented such that the flexible seal member is positioned between the valve seat and the backing member. In use, the backing member is driven toward the valve seat, trapping the flexible seal member therebetween. The seal member engages the valve seat and is simultaneously deflected backward toward the backing member, which limits deformation of the seal member.

    Abstract: A sound attenuating device is provided for attenuating noise in an exhaust system. The attenuating device includes an inlet end, an outlet end and a constricted portion therebetween. In use, the attenuating device may be disposed in a tubular housing or may be an integral portion of a tail pipe, connecting pipe, or muffler. Further, a sound suppressing system is described including one or more attenuating regions including attenuating devices. The attenuating regions are spaced to attenuate desired frequencies. Expansion chambers formed between attenuating regions contribute to sound suppression.

    Abstract: An apparatus (10) for cleaning a flow of particulate-laden gas is disclosed. The apparatus (10) has a housing (11) having a gas inlet (15) and a gas outlet (16) to permit a flow of gas through the housing (11). Suspended inside the housing (11) is an electrode element (20) having a charging element (26) which defines with the housing (11) a charging chamber (31) adjacent the gas inlet (15) and having an electrostatic force element (25) which defines with the housing (11) a collecting chamber (32) adjacent the gas outlet (16). The electrode element (20) is maintained at a voltage differential from the housing (11) for charging particulate in the charging chamber (31) and subjecting charged particulate in the collecting chamber (32) to an electrostatic force, whereby charged particulate is forced outwardly toward the housing (11) and removed from the gas flow.
