A cationic starch derivative is reacted with a monohydric alcohol to form cationic-substituted glycosides. Cationic starch derivatives include the tertiary amino, imino, quaternary ammonium or phosphonium, or tertiary sulfonium starch derivatives. Compounds generally characterized as glycosides having cationic-substituted glycosyl moiety are also claimed.
