Publication number: 20210166653Abstract: Systems and methods for displaying a cursor and a focus indicator associated with real or virtual objects in a virtual, augmented, or mixed reality environment by a wearable display device are disclosed. The system can determine a spatial relationship between a user-movable cursor and a target object within the environment. The system may render a focus indicator (e.g., a halo, shading, or highlighting) around or adjacent objects that are near the cursor. The focus indicator may be emphasized in directions closer to the cursor and deemphasized in directions farther from the cursor. When the cursor overlaps with a target object, the system can render the object in front of the cursor (or not render the cursor at all), so the object is not occluded by the cursor. The cursor and focus indicator can provide the user with positional feedback and help the user navigate among objects in the environment.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 3, 2020Publication date: June 3, 2021Inventors: John Austin Day, Lorena Pazmino, James Cameron Petty, Paul Armistead Hoover, Chris Sorrell, James M. Publication number: 20200150972Abstract: A method for opportunistically performing an action in a cloud computing system may include detecting a reboot event corresponding to a computing entity in the cloud computing system. The computing entity may be, for example, a host machine in the cloud computing system or a virtual machine in the cloud computing system. The method may also include causing the computing entity to be held in a stopped state and performing the action while the computing entity is being held in the stopped state, thereby eliminating a need to perform the action at a future time subsequent to the reboot event. The nature of the action is such that it would affect the computing entity if the action were performed subsequent to the reboot event. The method may also include causing the computing entity to be started after the action has been performed.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 9, 2018Publication date: May 14, 2020Inventors: Abhay Sudhir KETKAR, Gaurav JAGTIANI, Ajay MANI, Richard Thomas RUSSO, Shweta Balkrishna PATIL, James Cameron WHITE

Publication number: 20190301193Abstract: The current invention enables a structure to remain virtually motionless while the ground underneath it is undergoing significant oscillatory accelerations, such as would occur during a tectonic event. This is achieved by using the Meissner effect to maintain controlled elevation of the structure above the ground, allowing the ground to oscillate underneath the structure. The structure is able to move virtually without friction along an array of symmetric and parallel magnetic fields, which are kept parallel to the axis of ground oscillation typically via input from accelerometers in the surrounding oscillating ground. Simple buffering mechanisms keep the elevated structure from moving beyond the lateral range of the parallel magnetic fields, and facilitate the structure's return to its rest position. In this manner, structural damage from high energy large amplitude earthquakes can be virtually eliminated. This system and method can be extended to any object in a vibrational environment.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 31, 2019Publication date: October 3, 2019Inventors: Lief Cameron MacTavish, James Cameron MacTavish
