A fire stop assembly has a first portion with a split plate, split cage, split intumescent ring, split inner smoke ring and split outer smoke ring each fastened together to rotate together about a hinge on the split cage. The fire stop assembly has a second portion of the split plate, split cage, split intumescent ring, split inner smoke ring and split outer smoke ring fastened together to rotate together about a hinge. The first and second portions have free ends that spread apart to fit around the tube in an open position, and close around the tube in a closed position.

A drop-in fire stop assembly has a clam-shell configuration having first and second portions of a fire ring, split cage, split retainer ring, split intumescent ring, split inner smoke ring and split outer smoke ring each fastened together to rotate about a hinge on the split cage to open and close. The first and second portions have free ends that spread apart to fit around the tube in an open position, and close around the tube in a closed position. A latch on the free ends of the cage hold the two portions together in the closed position.

The improved assembly has a diaphragm seal over-molded to a top plate having a depending sidewall that is snap-fit to a base containing a fire ring. A tubular sleeve is connected to the over-molded top plate by snap fit connections to the sidewall and by threaded fasteners passing through sockets in the sleeve, sidewall and base. The over-molded diaphragm has a funnel shape. A first sleeve cap has depending positioning tabs that may be broken off to adjust the cap height relative to the sleeve, with an inwardly extending latching surface engaging the sleeve when the tabs are removed. A second cap has inwardly extending tabs that fit into channels on the sleeve fit between ridges on the sleeve when rotated to adjustably position the second cap on the sleeve.

    Abstract: A water hammer arrester and a process for making a water hammer arrester. The arrester includes a includes a cylindrical tube that contains a sliding piston separating the interior into a gas portion and a liquid portion. The gas portion is enclosed by a cap. The liquid portion has a pipe fitting for connection to a liquid-carrying pipe. The process includes assembling the piston, cylinder, fitting, and cap together outside of a pressured chamber used to charge the gas portion. A pressure chamber receives the cap and open end of the cylinder, and tabs around the cap allow fluid flow into the gas portion of the cylinder. Increasing gas pressure in the pressure chamber simultaneously increases gas pressure inside the gas portion. At this raised pressure, an ultrasonic welding horn engages the cap and/or cylinder to weld the two together trapping the gas therein under pressure.
