  • Publication number: 20070157472
Abstract: A utility knife has a body comprising a blade-receiving cavity defined by first and second generally opposing walls; a retention element laterally moveable with respect to the cavity via a hole in one of the walls; an actuator moveable longitudinally relative to the cavity between a retention position and a release position; the actuator having a recess opening towards the cavity and a cam surface; wherein the hole and the recess are aligned when the actuator is in the release position and offset when the actuator is in the retention position; the actuator in the retention position causes the cam surface to engage the retention element to force the retention element to a protruding position in the cavity; the actuator in the release position allows the retention element to be withdrawn, allowing the blade to be removed. • Publication number: 20070147963
Abstract: A hand operated file is provided with a thin ceramic coating of a transition metal nitride, such as vanadium nitride and/or zirconium nitride, on its teeth. The coating may be 20 um or less, thereby not altering the macro dimensions of the file. The coating may be applied using a vapor deposition process such as physical vapor deposition, and advantageously via a physical vapor deposition process where the file body does not exceed a temperature of about 300° F. The coating helps prevent galling, thereby increasing the useful life of the file.

  • Publication number: 20070074418
Abstract: A magnetic end hook for a tape measure has a hook member having a mounting section extending in a first direction and a hooking section extending away from the mounting section in a second direction generally transverse to the first direction. A distinct bezel affixes to the hooking section so as to capture a magnet between the bezel and the hooking section. A magnet is disposed at least partially in a hole in the hooking section and a hole in the bezel so as to be visible from both front and rear views of the end hook. The magnet may include flanges and a fastener, such as a rivet, may secure the bezel in place. There may be a second magnet similarly situated. A tape measure and methods of assembly are also described.

  • Publication number: 20070044317
Abstract: A manually powered cutting tool with cutting force at the cutting jaw faces that is multiplied several times by the mechanism, leading to a much higher maximum available cutting force than possible with conventional snips. The maximum magnitude of the cutting force applied to the workpiece may be much larger due to multiple stages of force multiplication present in the mechanism. The multiplication factors are established by the structural geometry built into the tool.

  • Publication number: 20060288586
Abstract: A utility knife has a blade carriage having a blade-receiving bay and moveable relative to the knife's housing to move a cutting blade disposed in the bay from a retracted position to a deployed position. A locking mechanism is operative to releasably couple the cutting blade to the carriage and may include a lock plate having an blade-engagement element and moveable by non-pivoting, generally vertical displacement between a locked position and an unlocked position. An actuator engages the locking mechanism and moves the locking mechanism from the locked position to the unlocked position. The actuator may directly contact an underside of a protrusion of the locking mechanism, may be moveably mounted on the sidewall to which the bay opens toward, may be prevented from being moved as far when the actuator is not aligned with the locking mechanism, or any combination thereof.

  • Publication number: 20060266867
Abstract: A tape measure includes a post with at least first and second arms spaced from one another to form a longitudinal slot having an end aperture for coupling with a tape blade retraction spring. The post distal end anchors to a housing sidewall via a fastener, and a fastener engagement region of the post extends from the aperture to the fastener's terminus. A distinct reinforcing collar is disposed about the post's distal portion and acts to limit movement of the arms away from one another. The collar may overly the post for at least half of the fastener engagement region and/or may abut a shoulder on the post. The fastener may have a first pullout resistance level without the collar present and a second higher pullout resistance level, advantageously double or more, with the collar present. Also, methods of assembly are described.

  • Publication number: 20060240195
Abstract: A metallic tape blade may be substantially coated with a powder and then passed through an induction unit to heat the powder and form a coating on the blade, with the blade having a concavo-convex cross-section when passing through the induction unit. Alternatively, the metallic tape blade is substantially covered with a powder consisting essentially of nylon having a particle size of 20 microns or less and then passed through an induction unit to heat the blade and form a nylon coating derived from the powder thereon. Alternatively, a nylon coating is applied to the metallic tape blade, with the coating having a thickness of not more than 0.0015 inches and an abrasion resistance according to ASTM D968-81 of at least 50 liters of sand. One or more of these aspects may be combined to form a tape blade having a protective coating thereon.
