  • Patent number: 8827697
Abstract: An aesthetic, partially removable orthodontic appliance is described, including a polymeric body that conforms to the lingual soft tissue and at least one wire member extending from the polymeric body. Each wire member releasably engages with a respective anchor that is, in turn, connected to the lingual surface of a respective tooth when the polymeric body is moved in a generally gingival direction into abutting relationship with the lingual soft tissue. Other features of the appliance include self-guiding magnetic couplings and couplings based on interlocking mechanical structures that provide releasable engagement between the removable section and the anchors, as well as related methods for making and using the same.

  • Publication number: 20130280669
Abstract: Dental assemblies and related methods of making are provided. The dental assemblies include a dental article with a bonding surface an adhesive having both a compressible material and at least one hardenable dental composition extending across the bonding surface. The compressible material is coupled to the dental article by a first quantity of hardened dental composition extending at least partially through the compressible material and contacting the bonding surface. The hardened dental composition extends over less than the entire bonding surface. Adjacent portions of the compressible material contain a second quantity of unhardened dental composition, preserving flexibility of the compressible material. Advantageously, this configuration was found to enhance bond reliability and facilitate manufacturing.

  • Patent number: 8491306
Abstract: In general, the invention relates to techniques for registering a three-dimensional (3D) coordinate system of a physical model of a patient's tooth structure to a 3D coordinate system of a virtual model of the same tooth structure. Techniques are described to register the complex geometries of the physical and virtual tooth structures by using a known physical characteristic of a pedestal associated with the physical model.

  • Publication number: 20120135365
Abstract: Provided are orthodontic corrector devices, related assemblies and methods which direct forces within the oral cavity. These corrector devices and assemblies include a flexible cantilever which is coupled to both a connector component and a force module. The cantilever acts to isolate adjacent components from mastication forces encountered during treatment. By resiliently deflecting in response to these inadvertent forces, the cantilever reduces the likelihood of device breakage and bond failure. Upon removal of these forces, the cantilever returns to its original orientation thereby maintaining the proper alignment of the corrector. Advantageously, the cantilever also allows the force module to be positioned further in the distal direction thereby enabling a greater range of connection options.

  • Patent number: 8114327
Abstract: An indirect bonding apparatus for orthodontic bonding procedures includes a tray having inner wall sections defining a channel for receiving the patient's dental arch. A number of orthodontic appliances are detachably connected to the tray along the channel, and each appliance includes a base for bonding the appliance to the tooth. The wall sections include at least one groove extending along the base of at least one appliance in order to provide a space between the wall sections and the patient's tooth structure when the tray is received on the patient's dental arch. The space hinders the flow of oral fluids such as saliva in directions toward the base in order to help ensure that the fluids do not adversely affect the strength of the resulting adhesive bond between the appliance and the tooth.

  • Publication number: 20120028208
Abstract: A force module is interconnected between upper and lower dental arches of an orthodontic patient in order to move the positions of the arches relative to each other. The force module includes at least two sliding members that move relative to each other along with a link for connecting one of the sliding members to one of the dental arches. The link is pivotally movable about two spaced apart, parallel reference axes that are generally perpendicular to the axis of sliding movement of the members. The link enables the force module to be readily shifted in a lingual direction as the patient's jaws are closed.

  • Publication number: 20120028207
Abstract: The present invention provides an orthodontic connector, along with related assemblies, used in coupling an orthodontic wire to an orthodontic auxiliary such a force module. The connector includes a slot with rigid and opposing walls and one or more flexible clips, which independently engage the wire. The combination of rigid and flexible components allows the connector to easily engage to and disengage from the wire and couple with a wide range of auxiliaries and fixed orthodontic appliances while simultaneously preventing the connector and associated auxiliary from unduly rotating about the longitudinal axis of the wire. Restricting this rotation advantageously prevents these components from either rotating into the occlusion or into the patient's soft tissue.

  • Patent number: 7762815
Abstract: An indirect bonding tray for use in applying and bonding orthodontic appliances to a patient's teeth is made by providing a replica of the patient's dentition including replicas of the patient's teeth. A guide is provided on each replica tooth in a location corresponding to the ultimate intended location of the orthodontic appliance on the patient's teeth. Each guide has a receptacle for receiving an orthodontic appliance, and serves to ensure that the respective orthodontic appliance is placed in its proper, intended position on the replica tooth. A tray is then formed over the replica teeth and the appliances for subsequent use in bonding the appliances to the patient's teeth.

  • Patent number: 7556496
Abstract: A method of making transfer apparatus for use in indirect bonding of orthodontic appliances includes the act of applying a spacer material over a dentition replica. The spacer material includes at least one cavity for releasably receiving an orthodontic appliance, and a base of the appliance is in contact with one of the teeth of the dentition replica. A tray is formed over the spacer material and the spacer material is then removed. • Publication number: 20090157869
Abstract: The present invention relates to methods of, and systems for, tracking content in communication networks by collecting content transmission information from the network. The collected content transmission is examined to identify discrete content items, and these are compared to predetermined content items. The result of the comparison is stored on a database, and if an identified discrete content item is the same as or substantially similar to a predetermined content item and/or if an identified discrete content item has been previously sent to or received by a subscriber or application, an event signal is triggered.

  • Patent number: 7473097
Abstract: Techniques are described for using radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags to track patient-specific materials throughout the manufacturing of indirect bonding trays. A series of RFID tags may be used to track the patient-specific material starting with the taking of a patient's impression at a clinic within a dental impression tray, through the process of casting and forming the indirect bonding tray at a manufacturing facility, back into the clinic where the appliances are bonded to the patient's teeth, and eventually into storage where the left-over materials may be archived. A database may be used to capture unique identifiers for the RFID tags and other information throughout the process.

  • Patent number: 7410357
Abstract: An indirect bonding apparatus is made by initially placing spacer material over a replica of the patient's tooth structure. A tray is then formed over the spacer material and hardened. Next, the spacer material is removed from the tooth replica and orthodontic appliances are placed on the replica at desired locations. A matrix material is placed between the tray and the replica and allowed to harden. Optionally, the apparatus includes features for facilitating removal of the transfer apparatus after the bonding procedure has been completed, and features for applying firm, uniform pressure to the appliances during the bonding procedure. Other aspects of indirect bonding are also described.
