  • Patent number: 8427996
Abstract: A method for selecting a channel for group communications in a conventional multi-channel communication system comprises receiving, for a plurality of channels in the multi-channel communication system, a talkgroup assignment list for the channels that identifies a set of talkgroups assigned to use the corresponding channels. A subscriber unit receives talkgroup assignment lists for multiple different channels, determines a desired talkgroup, and selects a channel assigned to the desired talkgroup using the received talkgroup assignment. The talkgroup assignment list is developed for at least one channel in the multi-channel communication system and identifies a set of talkgroups assigned to use the corresponding channel. The list is transmitted for the channel to a subscriber unit and is used by the subscriber unit to register with the system and affiliate with a talkgroup supported by the channel in the conventional multi-channel communication system.

  • Patent number: 8116798
Abstract: A method for indicating the status of communication channels assigned to a talkgroup includes: determining the channels in various sites in a conventional communication system that service a talkgroup for media transmissions between subscribers of the talkgroup; receiving notification of the status of transmission activity on the channels; and based on the notification, providing an indication of the status of the channels assigned to the talkgroup so that the talkgroup or subscribers of the talkgroup can choose to proceed with a talkgroup communication. The notification may be received by an infrastructure device in an RF site or a central controlling entity. The indication may be that the channel is free for transmissions or is busy.

  • Patent number: 8064480
Abstract: The application discloses a method and apparatus for providing interoperability for a mobile subscriber unit (MSU), employing a first protocol e.g., SCEP, with a packet-data subsystem operating at a second protocol e.g., SNDCP. The method includes determining that the first protocol employed by the MSU is different from the second protocol operated by the packet data subsystem. The method then includes creating a context information for the MSU when the determined first protocol is different from the second protocol. Further, the method includes determining a header associated with the second protocol based on the created context information and then receiving at least one data packet associated with the first protocol from the MSU. The method then encapsulates the at least one data packet with the determined header associated with the second protocol. The method then transmits the at least one encapsulated data packet to the communication network through a context manager.

  • Patent number: 7876740
Abstract: A method and system for synchronization of link layer windows in a wireless communications system is disclosed. At a transmitter in the wireless communications system, the transmitter transmits a plurality of frames in a transmitter's link layer window, wherein each frame comprises segments and sends a request for an acknowledgement of the plurality of frames to a receiver. Then the transmitter determines a last transmitted segment of an eldest frame of the plurality of frames in the transmitter's link layer window, if a response to the request is not received within a specified time period and sets a synchronization indicator in the determined last transmitted segment of the eldest frame. Finally, the transmitter transmits the determined last transmitted segment of the eldest frame with the synchronization indicator set to the receiver.

  • Patent number: 6836664
Abstract: Fixed network equipment (100) initializes a channel aggregation strategy and establishes a default channel aggregation. A request for a service requiring additional bandwidth is received from a device. An updated channel aggregation is generated based upon the request and the channel aggregation strategy to create an updated channel aggregation. The updated channel aggregation is signaled to at least one mobile station (116) via an in-band message.

  • Publication number: 20030158938
Abstract: A mobile IP registration solution for mobile nodes (108-111) of a wireless communication system (100) eliminates the need for sending (208) solicitation messages or receiving (210) advertisement messages from foreign agents (118). A mobile node receives an IP address of a foreign agent from a control message upon roaming into a new site or zone and attempting (304) to acquire a channel. Substantially immediately upon acquiring (306) a channel, the mobile node determines (308) whether to send a proxy MIP advertisement. If not, the mobile node retrieves (310) the foreign agent IP address and forwards (312) the foreign agent IP address to a processing element (e.g., layer 3 processing element). If a proxy MIP advertisement will be sent, the mobile node retrieves (314) the foreign agent IP address and a static capabilities list associated with the foreign agent, constructs (316) a proxy MIP advertisement and forwards (318) the proxy MIP advertisement to a processing element (e.g., layer 3 processing element).
