The blade protector is attached to conventional scalpel handles. Some embodiments show a blade protector for a flat scalpel handle. Some embodiments show a blade protector for a round or hexagonal scalpel handle. The blade guard and inner housing include a latch mechanism so the blade guard is latched in the position exposing the scalpel blade and in the position shielding the scalpel blade.
