    Abstract: Described is a branch unit that predicts branch instruction target addresses. The prediction is improved by using a Call-Return Stack to predict subroutine routine branches. The mechanism is designed for high-performance processors where call and return instructions may overlap in execution or may be issued speculatively. The mechanism maintains the state for the known execution trace and tracks speculative execution traces.
