  • Patent number: 6319104
Abstract: A tool for use in an abrading or resurfacing machine includes a head portion, a shank portion and a base portion, the shank portion joining the head and base portions and having a shape that tapers outwardly from a narrow neck where it joins the head portion to the base portion. The tool is inserted into a pocket in an abrading wheel having the same shape as the tool. Because of the irregular shape, centrifugal force will not cause the tool to become dislodged. The tapered neck serves to distribute torsional forces imparted by an adjustment screw which alleviates metal fatigue.

  • Patent number: 5503046
Abstract: An indexing system for use in a bandsaw sharpening machine which includes at least one grinding wheel for engaging the teeth of a bandsaw blade. An indexing block slideably disposed with respect to the bandsaw blade end has a pawl for engaging the blade to push it in a forward direction while friction pads inside the block frictionally engage the sides of the bandsaw blade. A wire link reciprocally moves the indexing block with a forward stroke pushing a tooth past an index finger. The index finger drops into the path of the tooth after the forward stroke and a reverse stroke is initiated pulling the block and blade back against the finger so as to hold the blade stationary as the wire link retracts the indexing block. The friction pads allow the block to slide along the blade to its initial position to ready it for the next forward stroke.

  • Patent number: 5351578
Abstract: A saw regrinding machine includes a circular saw blade mounted for rotation about an axis and having an indexing assembly. A side clamp secures the blade during a regrinding operation to prevent its movement and includes side clamping members having a clamping surface for frictionally engaging the surface of the saw blade that includes a surface portion formed of a resilient compressible material. During indexing the saw blade slides across the deformable resilient material but is not scratched or scuffed. The invention also provides a resilient compressible material as part of the surface of a slip clutch assembly in the form of O-rings surrounding magnetic members embedded in the surface of a flat plate. While magnetic attraction holds the saw blade in place against the plate, rotation is permitted where only the soft compressible O-rings are in contact with the surface of the saw blade. In this way rotation of the saw blade is accomplished without scratching or scarring its surface.

  • Patent number: 5295418
Abstract: An indexing system for a saw regrinding machine includes a rotary shaft on which a circular saw is mounted and an index stop assembly which stops rotation of the blade to position the teeth thereof for a regrinding operation. The stop includes an index finger interposed into the path of the blade by an air cylinder which is controlled by a timing cam. The air cylinder includes an output piston that pushes a counterweight causing it to rotate about a pin. A finger member is attached to the counterweight and at appropriate times rotates about the pin to intercept a particular saw tooth in a position to permit it to be sharpened by a grinding wheel.

  • Patent number: 5101690
Abstract: A top and face grinder for a circular saw blade includes an indexing apparatus which interposes a stop into the path of the teeth of the saw blade from a position laterally displaced from the plane of the saw blade. This stops rotation of the blade and permits a grinding operation to take place. At the end of the grinding operation the stop is retracted to permit continued rotation of the saw blade. The grinding stroke position of the grinding wheel is adjusted by rotating a cam which passes through the fulcrum of a rocker arm providing reciprocal motion for the grinding wheel.

  • Patent number: 5088358
Abstract: An automatic dual-side saw blade grinding machine includes a common actuator to advance the saw blade to place subsequent teeth in position for grinding and to clamp the saw blade to prevent side-by-side movement during grinding. Thus, no adjustment is required to synchronize the timing between blade rotation and clamping. The actuator is a double-acting two-sided pneumatic piston cylinder which has one end attached directly to the clamping mechanism and the other end attached to the spindle that carries the saw blade through a push-pull cable and a linkage that converts linear motion to rotary motion. The linkage is adjustable to accommodate saw blades having different tooth spacing. The piston cylinder is actuated by an air valve that is cycled by a cam driven by the motor that cycles the blade grinding wheels. Accordingly, machine speed can be changed simply by changing the motor speed.

  • Patent number: 4901604
Abstract: An automatic dual side grinding machine includes a pair of rotary spindles mounted for reciprocating movement with respect to a frame for grinding the teeth of a circular saw from the side. The reciprocating movement is provided by a rotary cam member which provides a program of movement for the spindles in a longitudinal direction wherein the grinding wheels move forward at a first rate of speed for a grinding stroke and move rearward at a second rate of speed for a retraction stroke, the retraction stroke being faster than the forward grinding stroke. The grinding wheels are driven in a rotary fashion by motors affixed to the frame which have output belts looped over pulleys mounted on the ends of the spindles. The pulleys have recessed portions for accommodating the belts and raised beveled edges to prevent the belts from slipping off as the spindles move in forward and reverse motion.

  • Patent number: 4846023
Abstract: A circular saw regrinding apparatus includes a frame for supporting a pair of side-by-side mounted grinding wheels connected to spindles which are belt-driven by a pair of motors. The spindles are moved in a reciprocating fashion along their spin axes by a motor driven cam and tie-rod arrangement. The motors are gravity suspended below the spindles from bushed spindle clamps so that they are moved in unison along with the spindles thus obviating the need for motor mounting tracks and an expensive and complex reciprocating drive mechanism for the spindle-motor combination.

  • Patent number: 4823649
Abstract: An automatic dual sidegrinder for a circular saw includes precision adjustments for the tangential grinding angle, the radial grinding angle, and provides a high speed automatic regrinding operation. The tangential angle adjustment is made by a torsion bar that presses against a rotatable index finger stop. The torsion bar is moved by a screw bearing against it mounted in a fixture attached to the frame. The radial angle adjustment is made by turning cams mounted on bolts bored into a frame which are situated in slots cut into movable plates which support rotary grinding spindles. The cams rotate the plates, changing slightly the radial angle of attack of the grinding wheels. The speed of the saw is doubled by indexing the saw on the completion of both a forward and rearward longitudinal stroke of the grinding wheels. The drive motor for the longitudinal motion of the wheels has an output cam shaft with oppositely opposed flats.
