  • Patent number: 7781709
Abstract: A non-spinning projectile that is self-guided to a laser designated target and is configured to be fired from a small caliber smooth bore gun barrel has an optical sensor mounted in the nose of the projectile, a counterbalancing mass portion near the fore end of the projectile and a hollow tapered body mounted aft of the counterbalancing mass. Stabilizing strakes are mounted to and extend outward from the tapered body with control fins located at the aft end of the strakes. Guidance and control electronics and electromagnetic actuators for operating the control fins are located within the tapered body section. Output from the optical sensor is processed by the guidance and control electronics to produce command signals for the electromagnetic actuators. A guidance control algorithm incorporating non-proportional, “bang-bang” control is used to steer the projectile to the target.

  • Patent number: 6955110
Abstract: An apparatus and method for cutting soft materials such as meat. Two or more spirally mounted helical blades are situated between two supports, and the supports are mounted to a shank. The shank is rotated to impart rotary action to the spiral shear blades, and the entire device may be used to perform various cutting operations. The distal or bottom one of the supports may also be a cutting blade, and a number of versions of bottom cutting blades are useable in the practice of the invention.

  • Patent number: 6859282
Abstract: An apparatus and method for locating the boundary surface between a layer of fatty tissue and lean tissue in a cut of meat, such as beef, such as slabs of meat undergoing trimming and cutting in commercial meet processing facilitates. The invention exploits the fact that fatty tissue and lean tissue have significantly different responses to incident light energy. By gauging the degree to which a generated beam of light is scattered and reflected by the tissues under evaluation, the invention permits the character of the tissue to be ascertained. An incident beam of light, such as green light, is generated and transmitted to a probe tip, which tip is inserted into the cut of meat under investigation. The light beam is emitted into the meat tissues from the probe tip, and then is scattered and reflected by the tissues, whereupon some fraction of the emitted light returns to the probe tip.

  • Patent number: 5335421
Abstract: Rules, including rulers, yardsticks, measuring tapes and the like which are marked along opposite edges with inch, half-inch, quarter-inch, eighth-inch and sixteenth-inch graduations. One edge having the one-sixteenth inch graduations in a color different from all the other graduation markings on that edge and sequentially numbered within each inch in the same different color. The other edge not having one-sixteenth inch graduations and the eighth-inch graduations being in a different color from all the other graduations on that side and preferably different from the color of the one-sixteenth inch graduations and sequentially numbered within each inch in the same different color.

  • Patent number: 4571119
Abstract: An attachment for dump trucks having a dump bed with a chute leading downwardly to a discharge end for discharging material along a roadway surface. The attachment adapts the truck to perform roadway surface repairs by receiving, grading, and pressing roadway repair material into place along damaged areas of the roadway surface while the truck is driven forwardly. The attachment includes a blade that is pivoted to the truck at a position rearwardly adjacent the chute discharge end. The blade is arched to receive and grade loose bulk repair material delivered from the dump truck bin through the downwardly projecting chute. The blade is also pivoted between an operative position, riding along the roadway surface, and an inoperative position above the roadway surface. Material delivered to the blade and graded thereby can be compacted and pressed into damaged roadway areas by the supporting truck tires.

  • Patent number: 4528837
Abstract: A pliers-type tool for setting pull-type blind fasteners of a kind requiring the stem of the fastener to be severed after it has been pulled to set the fastener. A pair of blades mounted on pivotal holders arranged to be rocked by an actuating member of the tool after the stem has been pulled is provided. The actuating member is slideably mounted on the pull bar and a tooth of a latch engages both parts during an initial part of the setting stroke. When the fastener has been set the latch becomes disengaged from the pull bar while continuing to retract the actuating member. Such disengagement is controlled by a cam which is adjustable on the housing of the tool to vary the length of stroke of the pull bar in accordance with the thickness of workpiece in which the fastener is being set.
