Publication number: 20230175956Abstract: Systems, apparatuses and methods for rapidly evaluating light transmission through coatings including paints, primers, thin films, surfacing films, laminates and the like are disclosed. The system includes a light source for transmitting light through a coating sample. A sample holder holds the coating sample in a position to receive the incident light. A spectrometer measures an amount of the transmitted light that passes through the coating sample. Optionally, one or more optical filters may be used to condition any transmitted light that passes through the coating sample to reduce the intensity of the light outside of wavelengths of interest. An opaque cover encloses the spectrometer, the one or more optional optical filters, and at least part of the sample holder to prevent light other than the transmitted light from the light source from entering the spectrometer such that any transmitted light passing through the coating sample can be accurately evaluated.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 2, 2021Publication date: June 8, 2023Applicant: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Paul Vahey, Jessica Adele Boze, Geoff M. Patent number: 7759298Abstract: The present invention includes a process using environmentally benign materials for the removal of adhesive residues from hard substrates, particularly vehicles, e.g., cars, trucks, buses, aerospace vehicles including airplanes, and the like. The invention uses an absorbable indicator (tracer) dye to aid in detection of remaining residues that may be in need of additional cleaning. The process uses a novel adhesive remover composition comprising a non-halogenated organic solvent, a non-abrasive thickening agent, a surfactant, glycerine, and an absorbable indicator dye. The invention provides a cost effective, safe, environmentally friendly adhesive remover composition specifically formulated for removal of, e.g., pressure sensitive adhesive residues from large areas of aircraft composite and aluminum surfaces, as well as others.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 2006Date of Patent: July 20, 2010Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Ralph E. Dufresne, James F. Kirchner, David F. Feider

Patent number: 7277266Abstract: A lightning protection system for protecting composite structures and a method of protecting composite structures from lightning strikes. A dielectric ply is fixed above and completely covers metal surface features, e.g., skin fasteners through a composite skin to a wing fuel tank. A conductive ply is fixed above and completely covers the dielectric ply and extends to an external connection to a platform ground. The conductive ply directs current from lightning strikes away from metal surface features, e.g., to the platform ground. Both plies may be adhesively backed and sequentially pressed into place.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 2006Date of Patent: October 2, 2007Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Quynhgiao N.
