  • Publication number: 20080106507
Abstract: A display apparatus includes a passive display, a light source, and a video signal input, in operation in response to a video signal the passive display modulates light from the light source to provide an image, and the intensity of the light source is controlled by the video signal. A method of producing a displayed image using a passive display illuminated by a light source is characterized in controlling the light source to obtain a displayed image with a desired amount of information, gray scale and/or color characteristics. A method of reducing power consumption by a display system in which a light modulating display modulates incident light from a light source to provide images is characterized in controlling power provided to the light source to reduce output thereof for relatively dark images.

  • Publication number: 20080030685
Abstract: In one embodiment, a system for monitoring eye movement through optical observation of the eye includes an optical device configured for mounting on a frame for positioning the optical device on a user. The optical device includes a light source configured for emitting light along a first path and a sensor positioned in the optical device to receive light from a second path substantially parallel to the first path. A reflector is located within a lens connected to the frame and configured when positioned on the user to reflect light emitted by the light source onto the eye and reflect light reflected by the eye back to the sensor. The reflector covers only a portion of the lens.

  • Publication number: 20070159602
Abstract: A display system in which images from two displays that have the same optical polarization that is not affected by reflection by a beam splitter which combines images from the displays, and half wave plate optical retarders to rotate plane of polarization and to null out optical dispersion effects to provide for stereo viewing of images via plane polarizers that have the same polarization direction.

  • Publication number: 20060268407
Abstract: A display system in which images from two displays that have the same optical polarization that is not affected by reflection by a beam splitter which combines images from the displays, and a half wave plate optical retarder to rotate plane of polarization of light from one display prior to impingement on the beam splitter, and a polarizer filter to block transmission to the beam splitter of leakage light caused by optical dispersion by the half wave plate. A display system in which images represented by polarized light from two displays are incident on a DBEF beam splitter, the direction of plane of polarization of one of the images relative to the DBEF is such that the DBEF preferentially transmits that direction and the direction of plane of polarization of the other of the images, which is directed to the other surface of the beam splitter, is such that the DBEF preferentially reflects that light.

  • Publication number: 20060109753
Abstract: A display system or monitor arrangement and method for stereoscopic displaying of images includes a pair of displays for providing respective left eye and right eye images and arranged in intersecting planes, a polarization sensitive beam splitter for combining the images from the displays in a common light path, and a viewing device to discriminate between respective images to present the respective left and right eye images to the eyes of a viewer for viewing. The polarization sensitive beam splitter preferentially reflects or transmits light based on polarization direction of the incident light thereon. A control tunes the intensity of light from the displays to balance the intensity thereof. Twisted nematic liquid crystal cells may be used as the displays, and optical retarders may be used in respective optical channels to rotate the plane of polarization of light and to compensate for optical dispersion.

  • Publication number: 20050007552
Abstract: A system for detecting eye closure through optical observation of the eye includes a frame configured to be worn on a user, a light source, and at least one eyepiece connected to the frame. The eyepiece has a reflective surface on a side facing the user's eye when the frame is positioned on the user and the reflective surface of the eyepiece is configured for reflecting light emitted from the light source onto the eye. A sensor is connected to the frame and is operable to detect light reflected by the eye in a direction that is substantially parallel to the light incident on a retina of the eye to detect that the eye is in an open position.
