    Abstract: The invention provides a method and system for adding conference call speaker identification capabilities to a conference call bridge server. The system uses both speech recognition as well as line activity to determine which conference call participant is speaking at any given time. This speaker identification data is broadcast to all conference call participants in various formats, such as in the form of audio, text, and multimedia messages. This allows different types of terminal devices to receive and process the speaker identification data and present it to the participants.

    Abstract: A method of changing the characteristics of telephone call data on an ATM network that is initially transmitted via a first SVC between a first ATM switch and a second ATM switch is described. The method includes the steps of sending a set-up message for a second SVC from the first ATM switch to the second ATM switch and sending a switch-over request message from the first ATM switch to the second ATM switch via the second SVC. The method further includes the steps of sending a switch-over acknowledge message from the second ATM switch to the first ATM switch via the second SVC and sending a switch-over begin message from the first ATM switch to the second ATM switch via the second SVC. The method further includes the steps of sending a switch-over confirm message from the second ATM switch to the first ATM switch via the second SVC and transmitting the telephone call data via the second SVC.

    Abstract: A system transmits compressed voice packets over ATM. The system receives a plurality of voice data units and an encoding rule for each voice data unit. A packet is formed from the received data units. The packet includes a header. The header includes the amount of data units in the packet, and the encoding rule for each packet. The packet is then placed in an ATM cell which is transmitted on an ATM virtual channel. The ATM cell includes at most one packet.

    Abstract: A smart card having a planar surface is provided. A plurality of sectors extend over the planar surface. Each sector includes a set of transaction processing electronics for performing account transactions in a manner independently operable from every other sector. The transaction processing electronics typically include a processor and memory for processing and storing data, a power coupler for transmitting power to the processor and memory, and a data coupler for transmitting data between the processor and memory and a smart card reader. The smart card serves as a substitute for a plurality of single-application cards. In one particular example, the smart card maintains up to four individual accounts, where each account is associated with a different quadrant of the card. The user simply selects the appropriate account by properly orienting the card upon inserting it into a smart card reader.

    Abstract: A method of operating a switched communications network redirects certain types of messages away from the switch to free up switch resources for other messages, thereby decreasing the size of switch needed or delaying necessary switch size upgrading. Messages are redirected by intelligent concentrators that can connect certain types of messages to their destinations without routing them through the switch. For example, messages between an origination and a destination connected to the same concentrator need not be sent through the switch. Similarly, messages between originations and certain high-volume, long-duration destinations such as data service gateways can be connected directly without passing through the switch. The intelligent concentrators communicate with the switch on a control channel so that the switch remains aware of the status of each origination or destination (e.g., so that it knows not to attempt to route messages to an origination or destination that is in use).

The communication system coordinates satellite phone beams with a satellite network to facilitate high quality handoffs. Satellite phones can access several satellite networks based upon stored parameters or actively downloaded satellite information.

The portable satellite phone also includes a database that contains the positional information of all potential communication satellites. When an object may be harmed or interfere with the antenna beam, an alarm may be activated to warn the user and/or the object of potential harm from the electromagnetic energy transmitted by the directed antenna.

Also, based on the proximity detector's outputs, an antenna beam pattern may be changed to reduce the power at the object or the transmitted power may be reduced to prevent harm to the object.
