Patent number: 11455188Abstract: Disclosed is a method for task pruning that can be utilized in existing resource allocation systems to improve the systems' robustness without requiring changing to existing mapping heuristics. The pruning mechanism leverages a probability model, which calculates the probability of a task competing before its deadline in the presence of task dropping, and only schedules tasks that are likely to succeed. Pruning tasks whose chance of success is low improves the chance of success for other tasks. Tasks that are unlikely to succeed are either deferred from current scheduling event or are preemptively dropped from the system. The pruning method can benefit service providers by allowing them to utilize their resources more efficiently and use them only for tasks that can meet their deadlines. The pruning method further helps end users by making the system more robust in allowing more tasks to complete on time.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 2020Date of Patent: September 27, 2022Assignee: UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA AT LAFAYETTEInventors: James Gentry, Mohsen Amini Salehi, Chavit Denninnart

Patent number: 10981107Abstract: Methods of recirculating clean air in an atmosphere of an enclosure comprise directing an input air stream from the atmosphere of the enclosure through a coiled duct at a rate sufficient to stratify the input air stream within the coiled duct according to a molecular weight of components of the input air stream and to form a heavy fraction stream and a light fraction stream, wherein the heavy fraction stream is relatively enriched in carbon dioxide as compared to the light fraction stream; withdrawing the heavy fraction stream from the coiled duct; and returning the light fraction stream from the coiled duct to the atmosphere of the enclosure.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 2019Date of Patent: April 20, 2021Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Gregory James Gentry, Chang Hyun Son, Robert Warren Clark, Jr.

Publication number: 20200262590Abstract: Atmospheric thrust stages, multi-stage launch systems including the same, and related methods. A multi-stage launch system includes a launch vehicle configured to transport a payload to a payload destination. The launch vehicle includes an atmospheric thrust stage (ATS) with a plurality of airbreathing engines configured to provide thrust to the launch vehicle for a vertical launch of the launch vehicle The ATS is configured to be retrieved and reused subsequent to returning to Earth. A method of transporting a payload to a payload destination includes powering a launch vehicle that includes an ATS and a second stage by providing thrust with a plurality of airbreathing engines of the ATS to propel the launch vehicle, decoupling the second stage from the ATS, powering the second stage to transport the payload to the payload destination, and returning the ATS to Earth.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 20, 2019Publication date: August 20, 2020Inventor: Gregory James Gentry
