Patent number: 6650230Abstract: A modulated backscatter communication system (e.g., an Electronic Shelf Label (ESL) system) includes a central node (e.g., a ceiling node) and one or more remote nodes (e.g., ESL tags). The central node transmits a downlink radio signal which is reflectively modulated at a remote node to produce a modulated reflected radio signal. At the remote node, a precise-frequency subcarrier signal is modulated with an uplink information signal to produce a modulated signal which is used to produce the modulated reflected radio signal. At the central node, the modulated reflected radio signal is received, detected and narrowband filtered to obtain the modulated subcarrier signal which is then demodulated to obtain the uplink information signal, with great immunity to close to carrier downlink radio noise and fluorescent light backscatter interference.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 2000Date of Patent: November 18, 2003Assignee: NCR CorporationInventors: James Gifford Evans, R. Patent number: 6278722Abstract: A digital portable telephone is configured without the complex circuitry normally required for its base unit and handset unit to switch between transmit and receive states while frequency hopping in a frequency hopping system. The architecture for this digital portable telephone provides improved performance over that of other digital portable telephones by combining the frequency hopping spread spectrum technique with other spread spectrum techniques in communications between the handset unit and the base unit. Specifically, delta modulation and a redundant transmission of the signal are the other forms of signal spreading that are employed. Such signal spreading advantageously achieves additional processing gain. Another attractive attribute of this architecture is a high level of immunity to interference from other portable telephones also operating in the same frequency hopping band.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 1998Date of Patent: August 21, 2001Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: James Gifford Evans

Patent number: 5946444Abstract: A system for creating still image or video collections for guests of amusement parks and the like a) identifies individuals by a unique tag assigned to the individual, b) automatically records the images of the individuals while they are at various attractions, c) collects the images over a communications network, d) arranges the images in a collection, and e) presents a personal set of collected images to the guest. In one embodiment of the invention, cameras are located throughout an amusement park. Each guest is associated with a unique identifier. This identifier may be contained within a readable tag, e.g., a card, badge or pendant. Tag readers identify guest when they are at a particular location and provide identification and location information to a control system. A communications network is used to interconnect the cameras, tag readers, control system and image recording devices. The control system controls the recording and storage of the appropriate image(s) associated with that guest.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 1997Date of Patent: August 31, 1999Assignee: Lucent Technologies, Inc.Inventors: James Gifford Evans, Richard H. Patent number: 5890069Abstract: A cordless telephone system is arranged for extending the operating range of a cordless telephone portable unit within such system. The cordless telephone system comprises a plurality of cordless telephone stations that are connected to a plurality of intrapremises telephone wire-pairs and support independent simultaneous telephone calls without interference. Each cordless telephone station consists of a cordless telephone base unit and its associated cordless telephone portable unit. Although each of the portable units is associated with a particular base unit, all of the portable units are able to operate with any of the base units in the system. As a user of a portable unit with a call in progress roams about a premises, all base units monitor the quality of the radio frequency signal received from the portable unit.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 1996Date of Patent: March 30, 1999Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: James Gifford Evans, Diane Z. Patent number: 5668560Abstract: A wireless electronic module includes a folded monopole antenna having an antenna port impedance which is reactive at the RF frequency of operation and which conjugately matches the reactive impedance of the electronic circuit which connects to the antenna port. A grounded shield is interposed between the antenna and the electronic circuit to reduce RF losses at the antenna.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 1995Date of Patent: September 16, 1997Assignee: NCR CorporationInventors: James Gifford Evans, Martin Victor Schneider, Cuong Tran

Patent number: 4078255Abstract: An improved noise loading arrangement and method are disclosed capable of measuring low intensity intermodulation distortion products, such as introduced in the operation of individual wideband transmission repeaters. The improved arrangement and method also have the further capability of resolving individual orders of distortion products. The arrangement utilizes a noise signal generator that produces a pseudorandom signal made of several spectral components providing high spectral density throughout a large bandwidth to simulate a broadband message load obtained by frequency multiplexing several independent signal sources. The noise signal is shifted in frequency before a quiet band is produced in the signal applied to the transmission apparatus to be tested. The orders of intermodulation distortion products appearing in the quiet band of the output signal of the transmission apparatus are individually measured to evaluate same.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 1977Date of Patent: March 7, 1978Assignee: Bell Telephone Laboratories, IncorporatedInventor: James Gifford Evans
