  • Patent number: 9906760
Abstract: A free-form lens (for example a phase modulator, lens or deformable mirror) may be made to reproduce a light pattern specified by image data. Source regions on the free-form lens are mapped to target regions areas on an image. Areas of the source regions are adjusted to vary the amount of light delivered to each of the target regions. Adjustment of the source areas may be achieved using a L-BFGS optimization which preferably incorporates smoothness and curl regularizers. Embodiments apply parallel processing to obtain control values for a free form lens in real time or near real time. Apparatus may process image data and display an image by controlling a dynamically variable free form lens using the processed image data.

  • Publication number: 20170287231
Abstract: A method for generating a polycube representation of an input object comprises: receiving an input volumetric representation of the input object; deforming the input volumetric representation to provide a deformed object representation; and extracting, by the processor, a polycube representation of the object from the deformed object representation. Deforming the input volumetric representation to provide the deformed object representation comprises effecting a tradeoff between competing objectives of: deforming the input volumetric representation in a manner which provides surfaces having normal vectors closely aligned with one of the six directions aligned with the set of global Cartesian axes; and deforming the input volumetric representation in a manner which provides low-distortion deformations. Deforming the input volumetric representation to provide the deformed object may be performed iteratively.

  • Publication number: 20170150107
Abstract: Light projection systems and methods may comprise combining light from two or more projectors. Each projector may be controlled so that the combined light output of the projectors matches a target for the projected light. In some embodiments optimization is performed to generate image data and control signals for each of the projectors. Embodiments may be applied in image projecting applications, lighting applications, and 3D stereoscopic imaging.

  • Publication number: 20170085846
Abstract: A new projector design combines one spatial light modulator that affects only the phase of the illumination, and one spatial light modulator that only affects its amplitude (intensity). The phase-only modulator curves the wavefront of light and acts as a pre-modulator for a conventional amplitude modulator. This approach works with both white light and laser illumination, generating a coarse image representation efficiently, thus enabling, within a single image frame, significantly elevated highlights as well as darker black levels while reducing the overall light source power requirements.

  • Publication number: 20160240001
Abstract: A method for generating a polycube segmentation of an input object comprises: providing an input mesh of the object comprising a plurality of surface faces; generating an initial polycube labeling for the faces by assigning, to each face, a label which is one of six directions (±X,±Y,±Z) aligned with a set of Cartesian axes, the initial polycube labeling defining a plurality of charts, and generating the initial polycube labeling comprising effecting a tradeoff between competing objectives of: making the initial polycube labeling relatively compact; and making the initial polycube labeling relatively faithful to the input object. The method further comprises generating an updated polycube segmentation by changing the label assigned to each of one or more surface faces and thereby modifying one or more of the charts to provide the charts with monotonic boundaries.

  • Publication number: 20160150627
Abstract: Embodiments of systems and methods for compressing plasma are disclosed in which plasma can be compressed by impact of a projectile on a magnetized plasma in a liquid metal cavity. The projectile can melt in the liquid metal cavity, and liquid metal may be recycled to form new projectiles.

  • Patent number: 9343020
Abstract: In exemplary implementations of this invention, light from a backlight is transmitted through two stacked LCDs and then through a diffuser. The front side of the diffuser displays a time-varying sequence of 2D images. Processors execute an optimization algorithm to compute optimal pixel states in the first and second LCDs, respectively, such that for each respective image in the sequence, the optimal pixel states minimize, subject to one or more constraints, a difference between a target image and the respective image. The processors output signals to control actual pixel states in the LCDs, based on the computed optimal pixel states. The 2D images displayed by the diffuser have a higher spatial resolution than the native spatial resolution of the LCDs. Alternatively, the diffuser may be switched off, and the device may display either (a) 2D images with a higher dynamic range than the LCDs, or (b) an automultiscopic display.
