Patent number: 5714680Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for measuring pressure in a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine is provided with a non-intrusive, metal-embedded fiber optic pressure sensor. A Fabry-Perot Interferometer is arranged in a terminated, single mode fiber to function as a pressure gauge. The fiber Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FFPI) is embedded in a metal part which is disposed in the cylinder head of the engine. The metal part and FFPI experience a longitudinal compression in response to the pressure in the chamber. In another aspect of the invention, a non-intrusive fiber containing the FFPI is embedded in a hole drilled or otherwise provided in the metal housing of a spark plug. The spark plug is threaded into the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine and is directly exposed to the combustion chamber pressure. Consequently, the spark plug housing and FFPI experience a longitudinal strain in response to the pressure in the chamber.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 1993Date of Patent: February 3, 1998Assignee: The Texas A&M University SystemInventors: Henry F. Patent number: 5464026Abstract: A device for smoking tobacco and the like has a housing having an upper wall and a lower wall, the upper wall mounting an air-permeable membrane communicating with a channel formed between the walls, and the channel being open at an end to the atmosphere. The upper and lower walls are preferably substantially planar and releasably attached together, for example by magnetic means. The air-permeable membrane suitably has a metal gauze mounted in an aperture formed in the upper wall, and the channel is preferably labyrinthine in form.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 1994Date of Patent: November 7, 1995Inventors: James H. Patent number: 4809522Abstract: A server for displaying and keeping cool wine bottles and the like includes a generally cylindrical housing open at the top for receiving a bottle, wherein the side wall of the housing generally conforms to and surrounds the side exterior of the bottle. A bottom wall is joined at its perimeter to the side wall to form a receptacle for housing ice in contact with the side wall. A support structure is positioned within the housing above the bottom wall to hold a bottle above and out of contact with the ice, with the support structure including an opening to allow placement of ice into the receptacle through the top opening of the housing. At least one-half of the area of the side wall is made of a heat conductive material and the remaining area of the side wall is made of a substantially transparent material to enable viewing the interior of the server.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 1988Date of Patent: March 7, 1989Assignee: Aurora Design Associates, Inc.Inventors: Noel H. deNevers, James H. Gardner, Robert M. Norton

Patent number: 4393665Abstract: A server for chilled wine and similar beverages or foods includes a generally cylindrically-shaped side wall into which a bottle or other container may be placed. The side wall is constructed of a heat conductive material such as aluminum, copper, alloys thereof, etc., of sufficient thickness to conduct heat as needed in its long direction. The cooler also includes an ice receptacle which holds the ice either in contact with the side wall or an extension or appendage thereof. The side wall acts to present the wine container with a surface which is at or below the temperature of the wine. This substantially eliminates the transfer of heat by radiation to the wine container. The server also minimizes conductive and/or convective heat transfer between the wine bottle and the surroundings. The side wall of the server surrounds at least about one-half of the height of the enlarged part of the bottle being cooled.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1981Date of Patent: July 19, 1983Assignee: Aurora Design Associates, Inc.Inventors: James H. Gardner, Noel H. deNevers

Patent number: 4388813Abstract: A server for chilled wine and similar beverages or foods includes a generally cylindrically-shaped side wall into which a bottle or other container may be placed. The side wall is constructed of a heat conductive material such as aluminum, copper, alloys thereof, etc., of sufficient thickness to conduct heat as needed in its circumferential direction. The server also includes an ice receptacle formed to surround a side portion of the side wall to hold ice in contact with the side wall. The side wall acts to present the wine container with a surface which is at or below the temperature of the wine. This substantially eliminates the transfer of heat by radiation to the wine container. The server also minimizes conductive and/or convective heat transfer between the wine bottle and the surroundings.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 1981Date of Patent: June 21, 1983Assignee: Aurora Design Associates, Inc.Inventors: James H. Patent number: 4353214Abstract: A method for storing excess energy produced by an electric utility during low energy demand periods, utilizing a closed system with a gaseous fluid as the energy storage medium and turbine working fluid. The fluid medium is stored at low pressure in an underground cavern which is located near a commercial electric utility system. During low energy demand periods, electrical output from the utility is channeled to the subject invention for conversion to potential energy, stored in the form of pressurized fluid in a second, high pressure cavern. This fluid transfer is accomplished by a compressor powered by excess electric output of the utility. During peak periods of power demand, a stream of the pressurized fluid is heated and expanded through a turbine/generator combination to generate electrical output. This electrical power is then used to supplement the utility output to meet the higher level of energy requirement arising during peak demand periods.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 1978Date of Patent: October 12, 1982Inventor: James H. Gardner
