  • Patent number: 6267301
Abstract: An air assisted spray nozzle assembly having an air cap effective for generating wide, flat spray patterns with improved liquid particle breakdown, utilizing relatively low air flow rates and pressures. The air cap includes a pair of longitudinally extending air passageways on opposite sides of a central liquid flow stream discharge orifice. The air flow passages each have a discharge orifice defined by a respective transverse deflector flange and a closely spaced inwardly tapered deflector surface which cooperate to deflect and guide pressurized air streams inwardly toward the discharging liquid flow stream for atomizing the liquid and for directing it into a well defined spray pattern.

  • Patent number: 5868321
Abstract: A cap is disposed internally of a spray nozzle and effects active atomization of pressurized liquid flowing through the nozzle by mixing with compressed air and creating turbulence in the liquid during the flow. The nozzle includes an internal cap which cap which imparts significant turbulence on the flow through the nozzle serving to help atomize the liquid using a reduced amount of air energy. Different caps may be used to create various selected spray patterns.

  • Patent number: 5553785
Abstract: A pressurized stream of liquid flowing into a body is divided into a plurality of angularly spaced jets which are rebounded in an upstream direction prior to being guided in a generally radially outward direction by a deflector surface. During flow along the deflector surface, the liquid is formed into a thin and very turbulent sheet which impinges against the edge portion of a plate and is shattered into small droplets. An annular curtain of pressurized air cross shears the droplets and breaks the droplets into finely atomized particles which are discharged through a spray nozzle.

  • Patent number: 5215254
Abstract: A self-cleaning spray nozzle in which a standard fitting serves as the nozzle body. A unitary valve assembly is inserted partially into the fitting and secured to it. The valve assembly includes a secured valve seat biased by a spring into a spraying head so that the valve seat and spraying head form a seal. The spraying head is designed so that it does not form a complete seal with the valve seat, the gap in the seal defining a metering orifice so that under normal fluid pressures, fluid will spray out of the orifice in a predetermined pattern. When a force sufficient to overcome the spring bias is applied to the spraying head, the spraying head separates from the valve seat breaking the seal and allowing the fluid to flush the outlet. The force can either be applied manually, or caused by an increase in fluid pressure. An optional deflection collar may be snapped onto the nozzle for influencing the direction of the spray.

  • Patent number: 5183322
Abstract: A hand-held spray gun including a handle section, a barrel section mounted forwardly of the handle section, and a nozzle section mounted forwardly of the barrel section. The handle section has a liquid inlet at a rearward end thereof and is adapted to direct pressurized liquid in a straight longitudinal path through a relatively inexpensive plastic tube which functions both as a liquid conduit and as a mechanism for moving a valve follower of the gun between open and closed conditions in response to actuation of a trigger. The handle section further has a pressurized air inlet which communicates with the nozzle section through an air passageway defined between the liquid conduit tube and a barrel section housing for facilitating liquid atomization of the spray discharge.

  • Patent number: 4899937
Abstract: A spray nozzle in which a nozzle body is formed with an elongated chamber having an air inlet port communicating with the side of the chamber, a liquid inlet port communicating with one end of the chamber, and a nozzle tip communicating with the opposite end of the chamber. The spray nozzle may be operated in a hydraulic or non-air assisted mode and with a relatively high flow rate by closing off the air inlet port and causing liquid to stream directly from the liquid inlet port to the nozzle tip. The nozzle also may be converted to an air assisted mode in which a stream of pressurized air is injected into the air inlet port and impinges transversely against the liquid stream to preliminarily break up or preatomize the liquid before the liquid is discharged from the nozzle tip. The conversion is effected by placing into the nozzle body an insert for reducing the flow rate of the liquid stream and for causing the air and liquid streams to interact to effect preatomization of the liquid.
