  • Publication number: 20150166745
Abstract: A method and system for the production of fibers for use in biocomposites is provided that includes the ability to use both retted and unretted straw, that keeps the molecular structure of the fibers intact by subjecting the fibers to minimal stress, that maximizes the fiber's aspect ratio, that maximizes the strength of the fibers, and that minimizes time and energy inputs, along with maintaining the fibers in good condition for bonding to the polymer(s) used with the fibers to form the biocomposite material. This consequently increases the functionality of the biocomposites produced (i.e. reinforcement, sound absorption, light weight, heat capacity, etc.), increasing their marketability. Additionally, as the disclosed method does not damage the fibers, oilseed flax straw, as well as all types of fibrous materials (i.e. fiber flax, banana, jute, industrial hemp, sisal, coir) etc., can be processed in bio composite materials.

  • Patent number: 9052947
Abstract: A method and apparatus for unified concurrency control in a Software Transactional Memory (STM) is herein described. A transaction record associated with a memory address referenced by a transactional memory access operation includes optimistic and pessimistic concurrency control fields. Access barriers and other transactional operations/functions are utilized to maintain both fields of the transaction record, appropriately. Consequently, concurrent execution of optimistic and pessimistic transactions is enabled.

  • Patent number: 8935402
Abstract: A remote resource application that is associated with an application container in a manner that the application container restricts the remote resource application from directly accessing at least a file system of the computing system. The remote resource application provides a visualization for each of multiple remote resources. The user may launch the remote resource by selecting the corresponding visualization. Some of the remote resources are accessed by launching from the remote resource application itself in the context of the application container. Others of the remote resources are launched outside of the application container. The remote desktop application may operate securely within the application container, and still serve as an integrated location from which a user can access remote resources, regardless of whether the remote resource is launched from internal or external to the application container.

  • Patent number: 8894474
Abstract: Disclosed are an animal stunning apparatus and method for inducing rapid unconsciousness and insensibility. The apparatus includes a stunning station wherein a live animal is confined and an applicator contacts an application point on the animal's head overlying a frontal portion of the brain and couples microwave radiation to the head. A microwave generator generates microwave energy of suitable power and frequency, and a waveguide directs microwave radiation to the applicator. An auto-tuner in the waveguide uses a directional coupler to detect forward and reflected power and to tune in real time the impedance for matching the load and optimizing effective power transfer. A switch discontinues the application of microwave radiation heating of the frontal portion induce unconsciousness and insensibility. The period may be sufficient only to rapidly induce insensibility, and insufficient for the insensibility induced to be irreversible, or cause significant heating of deeper brain tissues.

  • Publication number: 20140343455
Abstract: Attaching an elliptical excisional skin biopsy punch to an appropriately designed hand held electrically powered handle can quickly produce a sharply demarcated wound that is the same shape and size as the elliptical punch that was used. The biopsy specimen obtained in this manner can be obtained within 1-2 seconds and thus is a much faster method than the more laborious method of rocking the elliptical punch back and forth by hand. In addition, only slight pressure is required to complete the biopsy thus minimizing the crush effect on the biopsy specimen.

  • Patent number: 8814840
Abstract: There is described a medical apparatus, which may comprise a fluid collection vessel and a sensor. The sensor is arranged to sense when the fluid collection vessel is substantially full even when the fluid collection vessel is tilted by up to a predetermined angle from its preferred orientation. The fluid collection vessel may comprise a main chamber and a sensor chamber in fluid communication with one another. The sensor is located in the sensor chamber. The fluid inlet, the main chamber and the sensor chamber are arranged such that fluid entering the fluid collection vessel via the fluid inlet flows into the main chamber even when the fluid collection vessel is tilted by up to the predetermined angle from its preferred orientation, and, once the main chamber is full, any further collected fluid flows from the main chamber into the sensor chamber.
