  • Publication number: 20050060299
Abstract: A photograph repository system includes data storage for storing photographs in the form of digital data files and a search feature that provides for searching for photographs by location and optionally by other search criteria. In one embodiment, a photograph repository service is accessible to users over a common data network, such as the Internet. In the photograph repository service, each stored photograph is associated with a location, i.e., where the photograph was taken and/or the location of an object in the photograph. Users can search for and obtain copies of their own photographs that they had stored previously with the photograph repository service. In addition, users can search for and obtain copies of photographs that had been taken by other users and stored with the photograph repository service. The photograph repository system can also be implemented as a standalone system, a hybrid system, or a peer-to-peer system.

  • Patent number: 6487559
Abstract: A system and method of providing incremental updates for a geographical data set for use in navigation systems. The system and method include organizing updates of geographical data set into a series of transactions. Each of the transactions includes a transaction identifier that uniquely identifies the transaction, and n steps to be applied to the geographical data set to complete the transaction. All the steps of the transaction are required to be successfully applied in order for the transaction to be completed, otherwise, the entire transaction is not applied.

  • Patent number: 6321161
Abstract: A feature for a navigation system provides an evaluation of alternative routes. According to this feature, the navigation system provides information to the vehicle driver about departing from a route being followed. This allows the driver to make an assessment whether to depart from the route being followed or stay on the route. This feature enables driver-observable traffic conditions to be taken into account by the vehicle driver.

  • Patent number: 6239934
Abstract: A higher-capacity disk drive system and a higher-capacity removable disk cartridge adapted for downward compatibility with older, lower-capacity disk drive systems, wherein a unique control information format is stored on higher-capacity removable disk cartridges to distinguish them from older, lower-capacity removable disk cartridges and thereby to facilitate cartridge capacity recognition by the higher-capacity disk drive system. Upon recognizing the capacity of an inserted removable disk cartridge, the higher-capacity disk drive system can read and write data to the removable disk cartridge such that data which it stores on a lower-capacity removable disk cartridge may be read by lower-capacity disk drive systems.

  • Patent number: 5777813
Abstract: A disk drive system having downward compatibility includes a read/write head and a feedback servo controller for reading and writing information to and from a removable disk cartridge. When writing information to the data tracks of magnetic medium of a lower-capacity disk cartridge, in which the data tracks are substantially wider than the width of the read/write head, the read/write head is operated in an erase mode for several resolutions prior to writing the data. The read/write head is first shifted off track center by a small DC offset, then operated in an erase mode while being guided in a repeating oscillating pattern under closed loop servo control. The read/write head is then shifted off track center in the other direction, then again operated in an erase mode while being guided in a repeating oscillating pattern under closed loop servo control.
