Publication number: 20040012572Abstract: A user interface for a portable hand held electronic computer comprises a display for displaying plural display icons and/or menus. A pressure sensitive surface surrounds the display area such that the pressure sensitive surface does not overlay the display area. The computer controls the pressure sensitive area so the same region of the area has different functions.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 17, 2003Publication date: January 22, 2004Inventors: Anthony Sowden, James J. Patent number: 5742883Abstract: An integrated product mailing system comprises a product to be mailed and a mailer enclosure secured to the product for enclosing and mailing the product once the product is spent. In a preferred embodiment, a toner cartridge for a laser printer includes a cavity disposed in the cartridge, a mailer enclosure disposed in the cavity, and means for removably securing the mailer enclosure in the cavity, whereby the mailer enclosure may be removed from the cavity to be used for easily and efficiently surrounding, enclosing and mailing the product. The mailer enclosure is folded, compacted, or deflated in the cavity, and unfolded upon use for enclosing the product. An access cover secures the mailer in the cavity, and the cavity is integrated into the cartridge for functional efficiency and aesthetic presence of the cartridge and mailer combination.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 1996Date of Patent: April 21, 1998Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: James J. Patent number: 5530531Abstract: The present invention insures that the proper color toner used in a color printer is replaced once the present supply is consumed The printer has several of receptacles, one receptacles for each colored toner. Each receptacle has a unique key receptacle. The replacement toner comes in a cartridge, one cartridge for each color of the several of colored toners. A cartridge is constructed from a common body to which an endcap is attached. The endcap has a unique key that mates with only one of the unique key receptacles. Each cartridge is removably inserted in the correct receptacle.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 1995Date of Patent: June 25, 1996Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventor: James J. Girard

Patent number: 5461466Abstract: A container for holding liquid in its interior includes an aperture which provides access to the interior of the container. A valve has an open position and a closed position, is mounted in the aperture and mates with an actuator when the container is inserted into a print mechanism. The actuator causes the valve to transition from the closed position to an open position and vice-versa. A seal member is rotatably mounted in the aperture and includes a pathway for receiving the actuator. The pathway is normally positioned nonaligned with the aperture so as to render the valve non-accessable from outside the container. A control mechanism is coupled to the seal member and rotatably moves the seal member to reposition the pathway into alignment with the aperture so as to be in position to receive the actuator. The control mechanism is actuated when the container is inserted into the print mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 1994Date of Patent: October 24, 1995Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: James J. Girard, David L. Smith

Patent number: 5417322Abstract: An OPC belt is adapted for use in an EP printer which employs parallel drive rollers to move the OPC belt. A package for the OPC belt includes an outer package member that is shaped to be insertable over a used OPC belt on the drive rollers. The outer package member includes grippers which engage the used OPC belt once the outer package member is inserted over the used belt. The grippers maintain engagement with the used OPC belt as the outer package member is withdrawn from engagement with the drive rollers. The used OPC belt is thus removed from the drive rollers while still positioned within the outer package member. An inner package member is shaped to fit within the outer package member and holds a replacement OPC belt. The inner package member is insertable over the drive rollers to position the replacement OPC belt thereover. The inner package member is sized to be removable from engagement with the drive rollers when roller tension is increased on the replacement OPC belt.Type: GrantFiled: October 20, 1993Date of Patent: May 23, 1995Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Paul L. Jeran, David L. Smith, James J. Girard

Patent number: 5348407Abstract: A portable ink-jet printer and sheet feeder which can be battery powered. The printer may be manually fed paper for operation independent of the sheet feeder. The printer and sheet feeder are mounted on a base and locked at 90 degrees to one another. They may then be rotated into two operating modes in which automatic sheet feeding occurs, one of which provides a straight paper feed path for relatively stiff print media and/or printing relatively dense graphics. A paper output system includes a pair of wings and a deflector which place various arches in the paper as it emerges from the printer to maintain it over the previously printed sheet to permit it to dry. The printer may be configured by driving a print carriage having an arrow thereon to different positions adjacent a menu. When the arrow is opposite a desired configuration option, the option is selected by pressing a button.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 1992Date of Patent: September 20, 1994Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Ng L. Hock, James J. Girard, Lee G. Keen, James L. K. Chan, Chuin K. Lim

Patent number: 5299875Abstract: A passive wet paper handling system for use, preferably, with an ink jet printer. The wet paper handling system includes an edge separator extending generally upward from an output platform of the printer and inclined away from a printer paper exit slot for deflecting the leading edge of a wet media generally upward as the media exits the printer. A pair of deflector wings are also mounted on the output platform extending generally upward from the output platform and inclined away from the paper exit slot. The deflector wings are spaced apart from the paper exit slot so that the leading edge of the media first contacts the edge separator and then contacts the deflector wings.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 1992Date of Patent: April 5, 1994Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Ng L.
