  • Patent number: 4832790
Abstract: A method of forming a metal mold or die from a model of the mold contours. A workpiece for the mold is coated with a material which is resistant to an acidic etchant, and is then immersed in the etchant and brought into contact with a template for the metal mold or dies. Those portions of the coating contacted by the template are displaced until the template contacts the surface of the workpiece. The template is then withdrawn to permit the echant to etch any portions of the workpiece exposed by displacement of the coating. The process is progressively repeated until the surface of the workpiece conforms to any contouring of the surface of the template.

  • Patent number: 4818336
Abstract: A method of forming a metal mold or die from a model of the mold contours. A workpiece for the mold is coated with a material which is resistant to an acidic etchant and which has a melting temperature sufficiently elevated such that the coating is generally solid. The coated workpiece is then immersed in an etchant, and a heated template is pressed against the coated workpiece, melting any portions of the coating contacted by the template. The melted portions of the coating are displaced until the template contacts the surface of the workpiece. The template is then withdrawn to permit solidification of the coating, the etchant etches any portions of the workpiece exposed by displacement of the coating, and the process is repeated until the surface of the workpiece conforms to any contouring of the surface of the template.

  • Patent number: 4710334
Abstract: A method of preparing a template for a product from a sample of the product. The ultimate template is either larger or smaller in size than the sample. Initially, a mixture of liquid rubber and a curing agent is prepared. The sample is then covered with the mixture and the mixture is permitted to harden to form a temporary mold. The sample is then removed from the mold to form a cavity, and the size of the cavity in the mold is altered to either increase or decrease its dimensions. Finally, a hardenable material, such as an epoxy resin, is poured into the mold to form the template. If an enlarged template is to be formed, the size of the cavity of the mold is increased by immersing the mold in an organic solvent bath. If the size of the mold is to be decreased, an organic solvent is added to the mixture before formation of the mold, and after the mold has been formed, it is heated to shrink the size of the mold.

  • Patent number: 4377244
Abstract: A metal container end which is shaped to be attached at its periphery to a container body, such as a soft drink or beer container. The container end has a sealed closure having an opening activator in the form of a button raised in the container end. A lid is formed in the container end adjacent to and attached to the activator, the lid being defined by a frangible score line extending along the marginal edges of the lid from either side of the juncture of the activator and lid. The juncture of the activator and lid includes a fulcrum operable such that application of downward pressure on the activator causes the lid to sever from the container end along the score line and pivot upwardly from the container end about the fulcrum. The lid can then be manually bent along the fulcrum until it is pivoted adjacent to and coextensive with the activator.

  • Patent number: 4325779
Abstract: The invention includes the process of shaping a workpiece and for producing a surface contour complementary to the surface contour of a model. The process comprises the steps of applying a masking material to at least a portion of the surface of the workpiece to be shaped, the masking material being adapted to protect the surface from the effects of etchant. A template is then pressed against the surface, the template having a surface contour comprising a negative image of the surface contour to be formed in the workpiece, the template surface being comprised of material adapted to remove the masking material when the template is pressed against the surface and removed from the surface. The template is then withdrawn from the surface to remove masking material from those portions of the surface contacted by the template surface. Etchant is then applied to the surface not covered by the masking material.
