  • Patent number: 5488491
Abstract: A reproduction apparatus such as one having an electronic electrophotographic marking engine includes an image scanning device for scanning and outputting signals representing image density data on a document. An area designating device such as a digitizing tablet is provided for generating signals representing information relative to a selected image area of the document containing both foreground and background density. A processor is responsive to the density and area signals for operating on the image data in the area to define clipping signals representing parameters for substantially eliminating the background density while substantially preserving information with foreground density.

  • Patent number: 5392365
Abstract: Apparatus for detecting edges of black text in an original image. An edge detector which low pass filters the image signal to blur and widen any edges in the original image, and then high pass filters the low pass filtered signal to produce a first output signal which represents the blurred edges in the original image. The non-edge blurred signal is high pass filtered to produce a second output signal which represents the non-blurred edges in the original image. The first and second output signals are combined to create a first edge control signal that encompasses any edges in the original image. Halftone areas of the original image are identified by detecting dots in the original image, a second edge control signal that excludes areas in the original image identified as containing dots is created. Color pixels in the original image are detected, and a neutral color signal that represents the non-color portions of the original image is created.

  • Patent number: 5295202
Abstract: Replication of a two-color original image with foreground and background colors exchanged is effected on a received signal representing the color information of each successive pixel of a two-color original image by generating a histogram of the color data distribution for each color plane of the original image, determining a translation point within each histogram, and performing a histogram translation of the color plane image data about the translation point. The translation point may be determined by selecting the approximate midpoint between the foreground information and the background information in each histogram as the translation point, or by selecting the statistical average of each histogram as the translation point. Once the translation point is determined, a new color data value for each pixel in a color plane is selected by subtracting the pixel's original color data value from twice the color data value of the translation point.
