  • Patent number: 6243248
Abstract: Proposed is a molecular arrangement comprising a movable molecule which is surrounded by a molecular cage-like arrangement fixed on a surface. The movable molecule is in a mobilized state in which it is decoupled from the cage-like arrangement. This means that it is out of registry with the van-der-Waals lattice of the molecular cage-like arrangement. The movable molecule is further decoupled from the surface in that it is not physisorbed or chemisorbed thereon. It shows an energy barrier for rotational movement equal or lower than kT.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: June 5, 2001
    Assignee: International Business Machines Corporation
Inventors: James Kazimierz Gimzewski, Rato R. Schlittler
  • Patent number: 5910837
Abstract: The invention relates to a photomechanical transducer which comprises a photochromic element made of a first material and attached on a carrier element made of a deformable second material. The first material of the photochromic element changes its molecular shape when it is irradiated with light and thereby introduces a strain into the carrier element which as a result is deformed.

Date of Patent: June 8, 1999
    Assignee: International Business Machines Corporation
    Inventor: James Kazimierz Gimzewski
  • Patent number: 5737086
Abstract: A spectrometer is described with a new intensity detector for electromagnetic radiation. The detector comprises means for detecting the deflection of a cantilever which has a bimetallic/bimorph structure. The deflection is proportional to the absorbed amount of radiation.
