  • Patent number: 8900000
Abstract: A robotically mateable connector has a flying-lead plug unit and a receptacle unit adapted for releasable mating engagement with the plug unit. The plug unit includes a robotic manipulator grip assembly. A rear end shell which includes a cable attachment fitting holds a plug module having an outer surface carrying a plurality of axially spaced, annular contacts of gradually decreasing diameter towards a forward end of the module, and is rotatable relative to a plug front shell. The receptacle unit contains a receptacle module having a bore containing spaced annular contact seats of gradually increasing diameter designed for engagement with the plug contacts when the plug and receptacle units are fully mated. This provides a robotically actuated electrical connector that requires no rotational keying and relieves cable torque.

  • Patent number: 8511908
Abstract: A connector has first and second connector units, each unit incorporating an oil-filled chamber housing one or more contact elements to be joined. At least one connector unit has a face seal assembly which seals the forward end of the contact chamber in the unmated condition. The face seal assembly comprises three elements. One element is an annular elastomeric seal situated radially outward. The two other elements are inner seal elements which are pressed together radially to form a substantially disc-like shape. The resulting disc-like shaped seal fills the central, circular end face opening of the outer annular seal. As the connector units are mated, elements of the elastomeric face seal assembly are displaced, one axially, and others both axially and radially, creating an opening between the oil-filled chambers that is sealed from the outside environment.

  • Patent number: 8292645
Abstract: A keyless harsh environment connector has a plug unit containing a pin having an outer surface carrying a plurality of axially spaced, annular contacts of gradually decreasing diameter towards a forward end of the pin, and a receptacle unit having a fluid-filled chamber containing a corresponding number of axially spaced, annular contacts of gradually increasing diameter towards a forward end of the receptacle unit, configured for mating engagement with corresponding contacts on the plug pin when the units are mated. A sealing mechanism at a forward end of the chamber seals the chamber when the units are unmated and forms a seal with the plug pin on mating of the units. The plug pin is hollow and extends through an interface between opposing seals at the front end of the receptacle contact chamber during mating.

  • Patent number: 8025506
Abstract: A rotary joint connector has a plug having a plug contact module and a mating receptacle having a receptacle contact module designed for mating engagement with the plug contact module when the connector is fully mated. One of the units has front and rear shells which are rotatably coupled together and contain the contact module which is held in the rear shell so that the rear shell and contact module are free to rotate in the front shell. The mating contact arrangement is such that the plug and receptacle contact modules do not have to be rotationally aligned to maintain electrical contact, so that relative rotation of the electrical contacts of the two contact modules about the mating axis as a result of rotation of the rear shell does not degrade the quality of the connected circuits.

  • Patent number: 7769265
Abstract: An apparatus for managing lengths of flexible elongate elements between two fixed points has a single spool with a track of predetermined width sufficient for winding alternate turns of the elongate element about opposite side regions of the track in a folded figure eight pattern. A first turn of the elongate element is wound about a first side region of the track, then the element is crossed over to the second side region of the track and a second turn is wound about the second side region of the track. The elongate element is crossed back over to the first side region and a third turn is wound about the first side region. The process is repeated until at least the majority of the slack between the fixed points on the element has been taken up.

  • Patent number: 7481584
Abstract: A dry-mate connector has nipples on the front or mating side of the electrical conductors on both the plug and receptacle units which cooperate with an elastomeric seal on the mating end of one of the units to provide an individual seal around each electrical circuit in the mated condition. In a hybrid version of the connector, an optical contact assembly is provided in each unit which has a multi-fiber ferrule at the mating end of the assembly, allowing a high contact density to be achieved in a relatively small space.

  • Patent number: 7464728
Abstract: A two-part housing grips and surrounds a portion of a pipe, with ports at first and second ends of the housing through which the pipe extends. An annular end seal of elastomeric material at each end of the housing provides a seal between the pipe and housing. The end seals each have one slit for allowing the seals to be engaged transversely over the pipe. Each port has an annular recess for enclosing the respective end seals. The cross-sectional area of each end seal in a relaxed condition is greater than the cross sectional area defined between the outer surface of the pipe and the annular recess in the housing when the housing is closed around the pipe, so that the end seals are squeezed between the opposing surfaces of the pipe and housing when the two parts of the housing are secured around the pipe. Face seals extend between the end seals on opposite sides of the housing to seal the intersection between the two housing parts.

  • Publication number: 20080296426
Abstract: An apparatus for managing flexible lines has first and second spool members secured together by a hinge which allows the spool members to be folded between an open condition in which the spool members are in co-planar, side-by-side positions and a folded, closed condition in which the spool members are folded towards one another until they are aligned and substantially face-to-face. Each spool member has a groove extending in an at least substantially continuous loop which receives successive windings of a line or strip as it is wound in a figure eight pattern between the two spool members in an open condition. When winding is complete, the spool members can be folded together into the folded, closed condition.

  • Patent number: 7388152
Abstract: A tubular cable seal member of elastomeric material has at least one axial slit for allowing the seal member to be installed transversely over a cable. The seal member is installed in an annular seating cavity in a housing which encloses at least part of the cable, and is squeezed between opposing surfaces of the cavity and cable to provide a sealing pressure. At the same time, opposing surfaces of the axial slit are squeezed together with the same sealing pressure. The housing may be a clamshell-like, two part housing and may have an internal chamber extending between two cable seal members which provide a seal between opposite end ports and the cable at opposite ends of the chamber. Side runner face seals extend between the cable seal members along opposite sides of the chamber to seal the chamber when the housing parts are closed together.

  • Patent number: 7364448
Abstract: A connector may include first and second connector portions being movable between unmated and mated positions. First and second bladders may be in respective first and second connector portions and cooperate therewith so that opposing ends of the first and second bladders are urged together and moved from a closed to an open position as the first and second connector portions are moved from the unmated to the mated position. At least one of the first and second connector portions may define a circular constriction for closing an end of a respective bladder into a circular peripheral shape when the first and second connector portions are in the unmated position. One or both of the bladder ends may define a generally rectangular aperture when in the open position.
