    Abstract: An apparatus for severing and laying composite tape to form structural members with a shearing and compacting mechanism capable of a large variety of angular or circular severances. The severances are formed incrementally or digitally with a number of lengthwise slits of selected length. A plurality of transverse cuts are formed in the tape to intersect the slits to form a stairstepped severance. A curved chute at the discharge end of the apparatus has an endless belt to maintain the tape in alignment as it is pressed onto the work surface. The tape is compacted onto the work surface by a segmented roller system composed of several individual rollers. As the severance is reached, the rollers are selectively and individually disengaged from the work surface to correlate compaction termination with the shape of the severance.

    Abstract: A high pressure pump including a cylindrical rotor carried within a cylindrical cavity provided in a housing. Inlet and outlet ports are provided for transporting fluid to and from the cavity. A plurality of circumferentially spaced concave semicircular chambers are provided on the periphery of the rotor. A pivotal member is carried closely adjacent the outlet port and rides along the curving wall of the chambers as the chambers pass the outlet port directing fluid transported in the chambers to the outlet port. The rotor is driven by an electric motor. A bypass valve is provided between the outlet and inlet ports for bypassing the flow of fluid therebetween when an obstruction appears in the outlet or when the pressure exceeds a predetermined value.

    Abstract: There is disclosed an implant which has an inert, biocompatible core with a coating comprising from about 5 to about 40% of estradiol in a biocompatible dimethylpolysiloxane rubber. When the implant is placed under the skin of a ruminant animal the estradiol is released at a substantially constant rate to produce a greater than normal weight gain in the animal. The implant remains intact and may be removed from the animal at the end of the desired period of drug administration.

    Abstract: An alignment assembly for masking and a process for depositing a metallic coating on selected areas on the back side of a semiconductor wafer. The assembly and process involves a distinctive alignment chuck having a pattern of grooves therein and a mask aligned with the chuck. In the method, a photomask for the back side of the wafer is aligned with the grooves in the chuck, a wafer nested face down in the chuck, and the mask moved into contact with the back side of the wafer. The front side of the wafer has a pattern of ridges that nest in the chuck grooves to align the wafer in the chuck. A photoresist layer on the back side of the wafer is subjected to an ultraviolet light through the photomask. Unexposed areas of photoresist are removed to expose selected areas on the back side of the wafer on which a metallic coating can be deposited.
