Patent number: 6834430Abstract: An appliance knob has a polymeric body, which is molded, and a metal cup, which is made by stamping and drawing a metal sheet or a metal strip. The polymeric body has a central boss, which has an end face, a cylindrical wall, and an annular recess encompassing the central boss and having an annular floor. The cylindrical wall adjoins the annular floor. The metal cup, which is adapted to fit over the central boss, has a circular plate covering the end face top of the central boss and a cylindrical skirt encompassing the cylindrical wall of the central boss. The cylindrical skirt is unitary with the circular plate. The metal cup is secured to the polymeric body via two unitary tabs, which project through associated slots in the annular floor and coact with the polymeric body, as well as adhesively.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 2003Date of Patent: December 28, 2004Assignee: K I Industries, Inc.Inventor: James L. Patent number: 6767104Abstract: In a backlighted knob, as for automotive use, an indicator and a light pipe are molded simultaneously so as to be intimately bonded to each other, in a translucent structure. A polymeric body, which comprises a front wall and a central hub, is molded around the translucent structure as to cause the front wall and the translucent structure to be intimately bonded to each other. An outer cover is molded so as to cover an outer face of the front wall, except that the indicator is exposed through an aperture in the front wall and through an aperture in the outer cover. The indicator and the light pipe are translucent. The polymeric body and the outer cover are opaque. The indicator exhibits a light color, such as white, in ambient light. The light pipe is tinted so as to cause the indicator to exhibit a color contrasting with the light color when the light pipe is backlighted.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 2002Date of Patent: July 27, 2004Assignee: K I Industries, Inc.Inventor: James L. Publication number: 20040107545Abstract: A polymeric knob is made by a method wherein a unitary part, which comprises a hub, a bar extending across one end of the hub, and an indicator extending from one end of the bar, is molded and wherein a shell is molded over the unitary part, so as to cover portions of the bar, so as to surround portions of the hub, at the same end of the hub, and so as to allow portions of the indicator to remain exposed. One of the unitary part and the cover is molded with a recess or recesses and the other of the unitary part and the cover is molded with a boss or bosses fitting into the recess or recesses so as to interlock the unitary part and the body. A grip may be then molded over portions of the knob so as to allow the same portions of the indicator to remain exposed.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 6, 2002Publication date: June 10, 2004Applicant: K I Industries, Inc.Inventor: James L. Publication number: 20030106185Abstract: A fitment mountable to a panel, via two projecting studs, comprises a block and a key. The block has a recess receiving the heads of the studs and a slot communicating with the recess. The recess and the slot permit the shanks of the studs but not the heads of the studs to pass through the slot and the fitment to be moved in a direction along the slot. A closed end of the slot engages the shank of one stud so as to prevent the fitment from being moved in a given direction, beyond a terminal position. The key is adapted to be removably pressed into an aperture in the block, across an exposed portion of the shank of one such stud, so as to lock the fitment approximately in the terminal position. Two such fitments are combined with an elongate handle having two ends, each end being fastened to one such fitment, via a concealed fastener.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 12, 2001Publication date: June 12, 2003Inventor: James L. Patent number: 5509174Abstract: A knob and bezel assembly for an appliance having a wall with an aperture and having a control with a shaft movable over a limited range of axial movement, rotatable about the axis when moved inwardly, biased outwardly, and projecting outwardly through the aperture. A knob has a handle and a hub, which is adapted to be axially fitted over the shaft so as to be axially movable with the shaft, and which has a keying formation adapted to coact with a keying formation of the shaft so as to be conjointly rotatable therewith. A bezel has a skirt and a hub, which fits slidably over the hub of the knob so that the skirt is disposed between the knob and the appliance wall. Ribs formed integrally on the hub of the knob are fitted slidably into grooves formed in the hub of the bezel to enable conjoint rotation of the knob and the bezel. Two retaining fingers are formed integrally on and extend from the ribs and have outwardly hooked tips hooked outwardly over an inner end of the hub of the bezel.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 1994Date of Patent: April 23, 1996Assignee: K I Industries, Inc.Inventor: James L.
