    Abstract: Method, apparatus, computer programs and data structures are provided, according to at least one embodiment, wherein an author of digital content identifies at least some trusted code that the author trusts to be used to read digital content, and stores information in the unit of digital content that is capable of identifying the trusted code. In at least some embodiments, the unit of digital content is an electronic document. In other embodiments, a publisher of the trusted code, or an author of the digital content, signs the trusted code with a private key, and a certificate associated with the private key is embedded in the unit of digital content. The certificate may provide public key information associated with the private key. The public key may be used to verify that code is trusted before it is allowed access to the unit of digital content.

A computer program receives user data provided for one or more fields in an electronic document, generates input data containing the user data and metadata that provides a self-contained description of the user data, encodes the input data into a machine-readable code, and generates a final representation of the electronic document with a display of the machine-readable code. Upon reading the machine-readable code, the metadata can be used to identify a set of fields in a target system to which to assign the user data. In some embodiments, the metadata and the user data can be transformed and sent to a target system. The use of metadata in this manner enables machine-readable codes to maintain a physical representation of data that facilitates transfer of the data back into an electronic environment.

Each server in the distributed media network responds more quickly and efficiently due to its limited functionality and scope of media data files that it must server. Media data file servers transfer low bandwidth meta data to client devices allowing a significant increase in the number of clients which can simultaneously log in to a dedicated network server.
