Publication number: 20030205339Abstract: A slat or vane (30) for use in a covering for an architectural opening is suitable for use in either a horizontal or vertical orientation and in a horizontal orientation will not sag or droop, and in a vertical orientation will rotate uniformly along its length when rotated from end thereof. The slat (30) is formed in a tubular configuration and has a base material of glass fibers bonded together in a thermoformable resin so as to maintain the arcuate curvature desired for the tubular slat or vane (30). The slat (30) can be repeatedly deformed and will always return to its original configuration.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 7, 2003Publication date: November 6, 2003Inventors: Wendell B. Colson, James M. Anthony, Paul G. Swiszcz, Jason T. Throne

Patent number: 6631750Abstract: A vane for an architectural covering, such as of the type used in a window opening, is designed for vertical suspension so as to resist twisting along its length. The vane is constructed in a tubular configuration and may have one or more internal hollow cells. The external configuration of the vane may simulate an air foil or have other related configurations. The vanes are preferably made of a material having diagonal, dimensional stability or memory, i.e. the ability to resist stretching in a direction diagonal to the length or width of the material. A reinforcing strip can be inserted into an open end of the vane to provide a positive and durable attachment for suspending the vane from an operating system.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 2001Date of Patent: October 14, 2003Assignee: Hunter Douglas Inc.Inventors: Wendell B. Colson, Paul G. Swiszcz, James M. Anthony, Jason T. Throne

Publication number: 20030015300Abstract: A modular shutter blind system for a window blind application. A window blind is made to look like a window shutter by having airfoil shaped slats which traverse in toward the window when the blind is tilted closed and traverse away from the window and toward the room when the blind is tilted open in order to give the blind the clearance needed to tilt open while making it appear as if the window frame is the shutter blind frame. This traverse motion of the slats is accomplished by having the tilting axis along the centroid of the head rail move in and out while the blind is tilted closed or open respectively.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 16, 2002Publication date: January 23, 2003Inventors: Wendell B. Colson, James M. Anthony, Richard N. Anderson, Steven R. Haarer, Donald E. Fraser, Robert A. Null

Patent number: 6491085Abstract: A control system for a vertical vane covering for use in an architectural opening includes a headrail having an upwardly opening channel in which a plurality of carriers are disposed for sliding movement along the length of the headrail. The headrail is of a thin profile with only a minority portion of the carriers being positioned within the hollow interior of the headrail. The carriers are interconnected by a scissors-type linkage to effect uniform separation of the vanes when the covering is expanded across an architectural opening, and each carrier includes a rack and pinion system or a meshing gear system for rotating the vanes suspended thereby. Unique mountings for the endmost vanes allow the endmost vanes to cover the ends of the headrail. Rotation of a tilt wand or translation of a tilt cord results in rotation of a tilt rod via a pair of drive gears or a positive-grip pulley. Rotation of the tilt rod activates the rack and pinion system or the meshing gear system.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 2000Date of Patent: December 10, 2002Assignee: Hunter Douglas Inc.Inventors: James M. Patent number: 5454414Abstract: A window blind material and window blind assembly is formed by a front sheet and a rear sheet, both of translucent or transparent light transmitting material. A plurality of spaced, intermediate, parallel, preferably opaque or semi-opaque, vanes are secured between the sheets. The vanes can be positioned to control the transmission of light by movement of the sheets relative to one another. A tilt member connected to the sheets is rotated to position the sheets and vanes. A bottom rail is secured to the sheets.Type: GrantFiled: October 20, 1992Date of Patent: October 3, 1995Assignee: Hunter Douglas Inc.Inventors: Wendell B. Colson, James M. Anthony, Brad H. Patent number: 5392832Abstract: A covering for an architectural opening such as a window or door is in the form of a vertically oriented fabric assembly having front and rear sheer fabrics interconnected by vertically extending vanes. The vanes can be tilted through a series of carriers mounted on a track rail from which the covering is suspended in order to adjust the spacing between the fabrics between open and closed positions and adjust the light transmitting characteristics of the covering. The covering can be extended across the opening by separating the carriers on the track rail and can be contracted by stacking the carriers toward one end of the track rail. A unique design of carrier allows the covering to fold on itself in the contracted state, in the manner of a conventional drape.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 1992Date of Patent: February 28, 1995Assignee: Hunter Douglas Inc.Inventors: Wendell B. Patent number: 5390720Abstract: An expandable and contractible tubular cell window covering includes a plurality of contiguous cells which have been bonded together to form a wavy or undulating pattern along the length of the cells. The undulating or wavy patterns can be created by initially stretching the cells before bonding adjacent cells and subsequently releasing the stretch so that the fibers engaged with the bonding medium remain in a stretched or separated condition while the remaining fibers are relaxed. The cells can also be bonded with an adhesive that expands on curing to create the same effect without having to prestretch the fabric before applying the bonding medium. In a third embodiment of the invention, adjacent tubular cells are bonded together with curved lines of adhesive which again create an undulating or wavy configuration along the length of each tubular cell. The methods for forming the window covering is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: July 9, 1993Date of Patent: February 21, 1995Assignee: Hunter Douglas, Inc.Inventors: Wendell B. Colson, Paul G.
