  • Patent number: 7973490
Abstract: A voltage control apparatus (10) for an HID lamp includes a voltage control transformer circuit (20), and is connected between supply mains (22) and a high intensity discharge (HID) lamp. The HID lamp is started at full line voltage, and after a sufficient operating interval ensuring that the lamp has achieved a sustaining temperature, the operating voltage applied to the lamp is reduced, effecting considerable savings in energy use, with little or only an acceptably small decrease in light output from the lamp. Further, the voltage control apparatus include a circuit portion responsive to voltage transients on the AC line, and which effects restarting of the HID lamp in the event a voltage transient occurs which is sufficiently long (i.e., about ½ cycle) as to extinguish the HID lamp.

  • Patent number: 7825614
Abstract: A voltage control load center (10) includes plural modular voltage control transformer circuits (20), and is connected between supply mains (22) and a load (L) including one or more high intensity discharge (HID) lamps. The lamps are started at full line voltage, and after a sufficient operating interval ensuring that the lamps have achieved a sustaining temperature, the operating voltage applied to the lamps is reduced, effecting a considerable savings in energy use, with little or an acceptably small decrease in illumination provided by the lamps. Because the voltage control transformer circuits (20) are modular, voltage control load centers (10) suitable for a variety of differing requirements may be quickly, easily, and inexpensively fabricated and installed without the need for the conventional requirement of a custom (i.e., application specific) transformer design and fabrication, which conventional requirements are both time and labor intensive.

  • Patent number: 7084587
Abstract: An improved apparatus and method for control of discharge lighting, such as HID (high intensity discharge) lighting, effects full-voltage start up of the lighting, and sustained operation of the lighting at a reduced voltage after a selected and variable start-up phase or interval. The apparatus includes an auto transformer having a primary winding and a secondary winding. The primary winding is always in series with the load, but may be shorted to connect full line voltage from the line to the load. When the primary winding is not shorted, the secondary winding is connected to the load also, so that reduced voltage is provided to the load. A thermal analog device simulates the warm up time constant of the HID lighting unit, so that the reduction in operating voltage to the HID lighting unit is effected only after this lighting unit has achieved a sufficiently high temperature to sustain operation at a reduced operating voltage.

  • Patent number: 5623186
Abstract: A small package voltage reduction system which is especially adapted for easy installation into a conventional high intensity discharge light, such as a street light having a receptacle for receiving a standard ambient light sensor. The invention permits extremely easy and thus inexpensive installation and maintenance and yet provides a significant reduction in energy use which may save significant expenditure for energy by a municipality or other user of high intensity discharge lights.

  • Patent number: 5528110
Abstract: An improved voltage reduction apparatus specifically designed to overcome implementation problems of a prior art voltage reduction apparatus. The present invention is designed to overcome the problem of magnetic field flux induced harmonic distortion and heating associated with the prior art which otherwise substantially detracted from the advantageous implementation thereof. More specifically the present invention, also provides a highly advantageous apparatus for reducing voltage to a load, after first providing a full magnitude of voltage thereto by the use of an autotransformer having a series winding and a common winding disconnectable and connectable to one another by means of a relay or other equivalent switching device. However it also provides a bucking coil winding in parallel with the common winding and wound in bifilar opposed relation thereto.
