  • Patent number: 5336794
Abstract: Impurities, which may include soaps, gums, phospholipids and pigments, can be removed from chemically or physically refined glyceride oils in a dual phase adsorption and treatment process. In the first phase, the oil is contacted with amorphous silica to remove phospholipids and soaps or gums or both. In the second phase, the oil is passed through a packed bed of a pigment removal agent for decolorizing glyceride oils.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 1, 1990
Date of Patent: August 9, 1994
    Assignee: W. R. Grace & Co.-Conn.
Inventors: James N. Pryor, James M. Bogdanor, William A. Welsh
  • Patent number: 5298639
Abstract: A modified physical adsorption process is described in which small quantities of caustic are added to glyceride oils, fatty chemicals or wax esters having an FFA level sufficient to create about 20 to 3,000 ppm soaps. The soaps, together with impurities, are removed by adsorption onto amorphous silica.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 25, 1992
Date of Patent: March 29, 1994
    Assignee: W. R. Grace & Co.-Conn.

  • Patent number: 5231201
Abstract: Adsorbents comprising amorphous silicas with effective average pore diameters of up to about 5000 Angstroms are useful in processes for the removal of soaps and phospholipids (along with associated metal ions) from caustic treated, primary centrifuged, water-wash centrifuged or caustic refined glyceride oils.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 8, 1990
Date of Patent: July 27, 1993
    Assignee: W. R. Grace & Co.-Conn.
Inventors: William A. Welsh, James M. Bogdanor
  • Patent number: 4877765
Abstract: Acid-treated amorphous silica has superior properties for the removal of phospholipids and chlorophyll from glyceride oils. The acid-treated adsorbent comprises a high surface area amorphous silica on which is supported an acid having a pK.sub.a of about 3.5 or lower.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 15, 1987
Date of Patent: October 31, 1989
    Assignee: W. R. Grace & Co.
Inventors: James N. Pryor, James M. Bogdanor, William A. Welsh
  • Patent number: 4781864
Abstract: Phospholipids and/or chlorophyll and other color bodies are removed from glyderide oil by contacting the oil with an acid-treated amorphous silica adsorbent comprising a high surface area amorphous silica on which is supported an acid having a pK.sub.a of about 3.5 or lower.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 15, 1987
Date of Patent: November 1, 1988
    Assignee: W. R. Grace & Co.-Conn.
Inventors: James N. Pryor, James M. Bogdanor, William A. Welsh
