    Abstract: A method whereby the blood pressure metabolism in an individual showing evidence of dysregulation is improved when that person receives an appropriate oral administration of (−)-hydroxycitric acid. The potassium salt of (−)-hydroxycitric acid is a preferred form of the compound, followed by the sodium salt, then by the amide and other derivatives of the acid. The regulation of blood pressure levels over any given period of time may be improved with a controlled release form of (−)-hydroxycitric acid. Controlled release can be used to provide a sustained and modulated amount of the active to the body as desired and therefore regulate the use of the compound as a hypotensive agent.

    Abstract: Sequencing of a selected region of a target nucleic acid polymer in a natural abundance DNA sample can be performed in a single vessel by combining the sample with a sequencing mixture containing a primer pair, a thermally stable polymerase such as Thermo Sequenase™ which incorporates dideoxynucleotides into an extending nucleic acid polymer at a rate which is no less than about 0.4 times the rate of incorporation of deoxynucleotides, nucleotide feedstocks, and a chain terminating nucleotide. The reaction mixture also includes an unconventional nucleotide and an appropriate enzyme for degradation of nucleic acid polymers containing the unconventional nucleotide. The mixture is processed through multiple thermal cycles for annealing, extension and denaturation to produce a product mixture which is analyzed by electrophoresis.

    Abstract: A hierarchy of at least two assay techniques is utilized in testing for disease-associated mutations. The first assay in the hierarchy is selected to provide a highly specific test for the existence of the disease-associated mutation, although the accuracy of the test need not be high. The final assay in the hierarchy is selected to provide a highly accurate and highly specific test for the existence of the disease associated mutation. Intermediate tests of progressively greater accuracy may also be included in the hierarchy. Once the hierarchy has been selected for a given mutation-associated disease, a patient sample is analyzed the patient sample using the first, lowest accuracy assay in the hierarchy. If the result of the first assay is negative for the presence of a disease-associated mutation, then the next assay in the hierarchy is performed.

An RNA sample containing a target nucleic acid is combined in a single reaction vessel with a reaction mixture containing two polynucleotide primers, a first primer that specifically hybridizes with a target sequence near the 3′ end of the target nucleic acid, and a second primer that specifically hybridizes to the 3′ end of an antisense copy of the target nucleic acid. At least one of the primers is labeled with a detectable label, and at least one of the first or second primer has an RNA polymerase transcription initiation signal at its 5′ end, which signal does not specifically hybridize to the RNA target.

    Abstract: A system and method to implement callback for unanswered telephone calls in an Internet Telephony Callback system. A calling station and a called station are each connected to the system through a local and remote service provider, respectively, each provider including a voice gateway and callback server. A telephone call originated at the calling station by a calling party is processed by the local service provider and the local callback server generates a control message which accompanies the telephone call. The remote service provider processes and connects the telephone call if answered by the called party and sends a message to delete the control message from the local callback server. If the telephone call is unanswered the remote callback server stores the control message and waits for the called party to initiate a return call. When the return call is initiated, the remote callback server sends a message to the local callback server to extend the return call to the calling party.

The “crypto” software is written in executable code or an interpretive language such as JAVA. The sender selects a key “K” and encrypts the plain text file “X” into cipher text.

The system supports reuse of allocated transmission parameters within non-neighboring small areas in the region. The station is "virtual" because its central source need not be in any of the small areas, and because it uses different transmission parameters in neighboring small areas in a manner that previously would be used by plural different stations. System transmissions include information signals sent in both analog and digital forms.

Differences in quantity reflect the complete absence of an exon, or heterozygosity for a mutant exon. Next, the nucleic acid sequence of each exon found to contain an insertion or deletion mutation is determined, or of all exons in the event no insertion or deletion mutations are identified.

    Abstract: A ligase-based assay which relies only upon knowledge of the wild-type sequence of a gene or gene fragment is used to detect all types of mutations, i.e., point mutations, insertions and deletions. The assay makes use of a set of oligonucleotide probes, which may be packaged in kit form, which hybridize in series along the length of the gene. The ligation of the probes together form a ligation product, the size of which is evaluated. When the gene or gene fragment being analyzed corresponds to the normal sequence and thus perfectly matches the probes, all of the probes in the set are ligated together, and the ligation produce has a certain resulting size. When a mutation appears in the gene, the hybridization of the probe overlapping the mutation is impaired, with the result that some or all of the ligation produce is of smaller size. By evaluating the size of the ligation product, both the existence of a mutation and its approx. position can be identified.
