  • Publication number: 20250122329
Abstract: A method of producing a degradable material includes steps of providing ?-valerolactone 2-ethylidene-6-hepten-5-olide (EVL) or other suitable monomer; combining the EVL or other suitable monomer with a catalyst to form a reaction mixture; and subjecting the reaction mixture to conditions that will allow the EVL or other suitable monomer to react in the presence of the catalyst to thereby form a product composition including a polymer of the EVL or other suitable monomer, where the polymer is hydrolytically degradable.
    Type: Application
    Filed: December 20, 2024
    Publication date: April 17, 2025
Inventors: James M. Eagan, Luis D. Garcia Espinosa
  • Patent number: 12173116
Abstract: A method of producing a degradable material comprising steps of hydrogenating 2-ethylidene-6-hepten-5-olide (EVL) by introducing hydrogen to the EVL in order to obtain modified EVL; combining the modified EVL with a catalyst to form a reaction mixture; and subjecting the reaction mixture to reaction conditions that will allow the modified EVL to react by ring-opening polymerization in the presence of the catalyst to form a product composition including polymeric-EVL, wherein the polymeric-EVL is hydrolytically degradable, wherein the reaction conditions include a reaction temperature of from ?40° C. to 70° C.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: December 24, 2024
    Assignee: THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON
Inventors: James M. Eagan, Luis D. Garcia Espinosa
  • Publication number: 20220306792
Abstract: Provided are graft copolymers, methods of making graft copolymers, polymer blends made from graft copolymers, methods of making polymer blends, and articles made from graft copolymers and blends thereof. The graft copolymers may be made from ethylene and isotactic polypropylene. The polymer blends may be made from semi-crystalline polyethylene, polypropylene, and a graft copolymer of the present disclosure.
