  • Patent number: 5520968
Abstract: Second-order nonlinear optical polymeric films, including alternating monlecular layers of two head-to-head, mainchain, amphophilic, chromophoric polymers, one polymer having the electron donating end of the chromophore attached to hydrophilic groups, and the other polymer having the electron donating end of the chromophore attached to hydrophobic groups, and methods of fabricating the films for use in optonics.

  • Patent number: 5341090
Abstract: A bidirectional, transconductance, DC amplifier exhibiting a compliance voltage exceeding either of the DC power supply voltages nearly double the compliance voltage of conventional circuits. The circuit uses a differential input operational amplifier. A voltage divider has its first resistor connected between the amplifier input and the noninverting input of the operational amplifier. The second resistor of the voltage divider is connected between the noninverting input and a common ground. A third resistor is connected between the amplifier input and the inverting input of the operational amplifier. A feedback circuit branch is connected between the inverting input and the output of the operational amplifier and includes a pair of output terminals for connecting the load in series in the feedback circuit branch.

  • Patent number: 5286803
Abstract: Coumarin dyes such as alkylaminocoumarincarboxamides which have functional hydroxyl groups or which are chemically attached to vinyl monomers such as methacrylic acid. The dyes which are chemically attached to vinyl monomers can be copolymerized, e.g. with acrylic monomers to produce a coumarin dye-containing polymer. The dyes which have functional hydroxyl groups can be reacted with an existing polymer or copolymer, e.g. a copolymer of styrene and acrylic acid to esterify the acid groups of the polymer to form a coumarin dye-containing polymer. Such coumarin dye-containing polymers are formed into films and fibers which when poled in an electric field yield a film or fiber with nonlinear optical properties.

  • Patent number: 5240208
Abstract: Structural formations for mounting an electrical terminal block in an aperture of a panel. A groove is formed on a longitudinal side of a rectangular terminal block. A shoulder with a surface facing toward the panel is formed on the opposite longitudinal side of the terminal block. Coplanar shoulders facing the same direction as the longitudinal shoulder are formed on the ends of the terminal block. The groove has greater width than the thickness of the panel, allowing for the panel to be angled with respect to the groove during insertion. The panel has an aperture with edges that contact the terminal block at all three coplanar shoulders, and the fourth edge contacts the oppositely facing surface of the groove.

  • Patent number: 5225285
Abstract: Comb-shaped polymers, comprised of hydrophilic backbones and dye-containi hydrophobic side chains are fabricated into multilayered, polarized, noncentrosymmetric, thin films by means of Langmuir-Blodgett processing techniques. These films exhibit harmonic, generated by shining a laser through the film, increases quadratically with the number of layers of polymeric dye in the film.

  • Patent number: 5162453
Abstract: Comb-shaped polymers, comprised of hydrophilic backbones and dye-containi hydrophobic side chains are synthesized for use in multilayered, noncentrosymmetric, thin films by means of Langmuir-Blodgett processing techniques. The second harmonic signal generation exhibited by these films increases quadratically with the number of layers of polymeric dye in the film.

  • Patent number: 4122704
Abstract: A portable testing device for directly measuring developed lateral pressure induced on a material by a vertical applied pressure while the lateral expansion is adjustable. The testing device comprises a thin-walled cylindrical sleeve-like receptacle which is capable of lateral expansion in response to a vertical applied force on the material contained in the receptacle. The sleeve is provided with a slit formed in the wall thereof which extends between the upper and lower ends thereof to define first and second side edge portions. Apparatus is provided for preventing and/or adjusting lateral movement of the first side edge portion as the vertical applied force is applied to the material contained in the receptacle. A pressure sensing cylinder is connected to the second side edge portion and has a fluid pressure gauge operatively connected thereto for sensing the developed lateral stress.
