Patent number: 6944498Abstract: A method of treating a patient for ventricular tachycardia using a wearable defibrillator includes monitoring the patient for a predetermined condition via one or more electrodes on the defibrillator, sending a message to the patient in response to the predetermined condition, activating the defibrillator so that the defibrillator delivers defibrillation energy to the patient, and storing at least one of the results of the monitoring, sending and activating steps in a memory on the defibrillator. The method also includes downloading information stored in the memory of the defibrillator to a base station having an external interface, and transmitting the information downloaded from the memory of the base station to an external location via the external interface of the base station.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 2002Date of Patent: September 13, 2005Assignee: Cardiac Science, Inc.Inventors: James M. Publication number: 20040249419Abstract: An external defibrillator is customized for at least one person, i.e., an anticipated patient, through creation of a profile for the anticipated patient that allows the defibrillator and users of the defibrillator to provide customized treatment to the patient. The profile may include treatment parameters for the anticipated patient, such as defibrillation therapy parameters selected for the patient. The profile may also include a baseline recording of a physiological parameter of the patient, and medical history and personal information regarding the patient. In some embodiments, the external defibrillator stores a profile for each of one or more anticipated patients within a memory. In other embodiments, a profile for an anticipated patient is stored within a medium associated with that anticipated patient. The medium may, for example, be a removable medium for external defibrillators.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 26, 2004Publication date: December 9, 2004Inventors: Fred William Chapman, Richard C. Nova, David Robert Hampton, James M. Owen, Robert Niskanen, John Carlton Daynes, Ronald Eugene Stickney, Rene Ann Young Mitchell, Gregory T. Kavounas

Publication number: 20040116969Abstract: The presence of a cardiac pulse in a patient is determined by evaluating physiological signals in the patient. In one embodiment, a medical device evaluates optical characteristics of light transmitted into a patient to ascertain physiological signals, such as pulsatile changes in general blood volume proximate a light detector module. Using these features, the medical device determines whether a cardiac pulse is present in the patient. The medical device may also be configured to report whether the patient is in a VF, VT, asystole, or PEA condition, in addition to being in a pulseless condition, and prompt different therapies, such as chest compressions, rescue breathing, defibrillation, and PEA-specific electrotherapy, depending on the analysis of the physiological signals. Auto-capture of a cardiac pulse using pacing stimuli is further provided.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 2, 2003Publication date: June 17, 2004Inventors: James M. Owen, Cynthia P. Jayne, William E. Publication number: 20030055460Abstract: A defibrillator for delivering therapeutic electrical energy to a patient's heart generally includes a power source, electrodes, a patient impedance sensor, and a controller. The electrode are capable of being applied to a patient and are operably coupled to the power source. The impedance sensor is couplable to the patient. The controller controls the power source and is communication with the patient impedance sensor. In response to the patient impedance and based thereon, the controller can configure a variety of circuit options to deliver a low current flow defibrillation waveform , which has a substantially constant tilt, to the patient.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 31, 2002Publication date: March 20, 2003Inventors: James M. Patent number: 6148233Abstract: Electrode devices optimized for long-term wear in conjunction with an external cardiac defibrillator are described. In preferred embodiments the electrode devices include electrodes that consist of multiple segments, thereby providing enhanced efficacy and impedance characteristics relative to conventionally shaped continuous electrodes. In certain embodiments the conductive surface for contacting a patient's skin of the electrodes is continuous but contains regions separated by open spaces, thereby similarly providing enhanced efficacy and impedance characteristics. The electrode devices are fabricated using materials selected to minimize skin irritation and discomfort.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 1998Date of Patent: November 14, 2000Assignee: Cardiac Science, Inc.Inventors: James M.
