Abstract: A computerized user interface for assisting a computer user selects a default operating system for a computer. The computerized interface operates during a current computing session and provides a list of operating systems available. A user can make a selection using standard activatible controls such as icons, alphanumeric lists and highlighting. Once selected, an operating becomes the default operating system software on the computer. Therefore, during the next startup of the computer a selected operating system will boot unless there is some other intervention. In addition to selecting an operating system, this invention can also be used to cause the computer to restart. Restart can be set to execute immediately or to execute upon a change in the default operating system. In addition this invention can be caused to uninstall thereby erasing the program files relating to this invention.

Abstract: A method and system for authenticating a user to access a computer system. The method comprises communicating security information to the computer system, and providing the computer system with an implicit input. The method further comprises determining whether the security information and implicit input match corresponding information associated with the user. The method further comprises granting the user access to the computer system in the event of a satisfactory match. When authenticating the user, the method and system consider the possibility of the user being legitimate but subject to duress or force by a computer hacker.

Abstract: A computer implemented method is disclosed for automatically intercepting and analyzing computer modem commands for toll characteristics andthen alternatively permitting or preventing the computer modem command based on the results of the toll analysis and user preferences. The computer modem command is analyzed by extracting any proposed telephone dialing instructions and comparing the proposed telephone number to be dialed with data provided by the local telephone service provider (TSP) in order to determine whether the proposed telephone number would result in a “toll call,” or telephone service charges over and above the usual monthly rate, if transmitted to the modem. If a telephone service charge would result, the computer user is notified and prompted to give further instructions concerning whether the toll call should be placed.
