  • Patent number: 5312191
Abstract: A high speed anti-friction bearing includes an internal impeller mechanism to provide improved high speed lubrication for the anti-friction elements. At high bearing speeds the impeller mechanism scoops liquid lubricant from a liquid annulus centrifugally generated on the outer wall of the bearing. The scooped liquid is hurled inwardly onto the anti-friction elements as a fine mist. The bearing lubrication process is achieved with minimum heat generation and minimum energy loss insofar as the anti-friction elements do not plow through large masses of lubricant.

  • Patent number: 5133187
Abstract: A fluid circuit assembly for maintaining substantially constant pressure between two abutting solid objects, the circuit assembly comprising a master cylinder assembly, a plurality of working cylinder assemblies, piston rods extending from the working cylinder assemblies, a spool on distal ends of the piston rods adapted to engage a surface against which it is desired to maintain constant pressure, the master cylinder and the working cylinders having first chambers in communication with a first fluid circuit, the master cylinder having a second chamber in communication with a source of gas under a selected substantially constant pressure, said gas being in communication with a gas reservoir portion of a liquid/gas tank, a liquid reservoir portion of said tank being in communication with second chambers of said working cylinder assemblies, such that upon change of pressure on the spool by the surface, a reaction is generated in the circuit assembly, such as to move the spool to restore a selected pressure betw

  • Patent number: 5111565
Abstract: A compensating roll assembly for flexible web material, the roll assembly comprising a central axle member and two end axle members fixed one to each end of the central axle member, support rings disposed around the end axle members, spools disposed on the support rings and the central axle member, roll surface material disposed upon the spools and adapted to engage the web material, and mechanisms disposed within the end axle members to automatically move the support rings during a rolling operation to cause movement of the surface material to maintain substantially constant pressure on the web material by the roll surface material.

  • Patent number: 4805274
Abstract: Disclosed is a remotely-controlled adjustable-curvature roll of the present invention which includes a hollow, cylindrical axle in which two rods are inserted. Each of the rods is securely fastened to an endplate at one end of the axle, and the opposite end of each rod is threaded within one of two oppositely rotating intermeshed gears. An air-impact motor is connected to one of the meshed gears to rotate the gear to which it is connected. The rotation of the gears in one direction causes an increase in the compression applied to one of the rods while at the same time exerting an increased tension on the other rod which is connected to the oppositely rotating gear. This combination of tension and compression causes the curvature of the roll to change. A remote control unit regulates the flow of air from an air supply to the air-impact motor. The remote control unit includes a filter for filtering the air supply and an oil mist lubricator for adding a lubricant to the air supply.

  • Patent number: 4706349

Each of these rods is securely fastened to an endplate at one end of the axle, and the opposite end of each rod is threaded within one of two oppositely rotating intermeshed gears. An adjusting hexagon or other similar adjusting device is connected to one of the meshed gears and the turning of the adjusting device in one direction causes an increase in the compression applied to one of the rods while at the same time exerting an increased tension on the other rod which is connected to the oppositely rotating gear. This combination of tension and compression causes the curvature of the roll to change. An indicator attached to the adjusting device provides a reading of the chosen degree of curvature. The axle may be surrounded by an outer sleeve which rotates, through the aid of ball bearings, around the axle.

  • Patent number: 4236285
Abstract: A curved roll with a longitudinally-curved axle which supports roll sections or spools by way of roller bearings seated on the axle has a flexible torque coupling between adjacent spools. Each coupling flexes to accommodate the curvature of the roll and both seals lubricant within the roll from leakage and seals dirt and other external contaminants from the roll interior. Each coupling employs a tubular coupling element which mechanically seats at each axial end within a circumferential channel internally recessing the spool end. Axially-extending members on each spool engage the coupling element for ensuring positive torque tranfer between the adjacent spools.

  • Patent number: 4171034
Abstract: A curved roll having spools rotatable about an axle on bearings lubricates the bearings with an annular body of liquid lubricant formed on the interior of the spools as they rotate. A pair of scoops located at opposite ends of the axle and facing in opposite rotational directions recirculate lubricant from the annulus through a flow path exterior to the roll and which includes a filter, a flow control device, pressure and flow gauges and a valve for adding and draining the lubricant from the system. The lubricant in the annulus is distributed uniformly along the roll by level control scoops that are each positioned in a compartment defined by an adjacent pair of bearings, the axle and the spools. Excess liquid in one compartment is skimmed by the associated up-take scoop and directed to lubricant reservoir; whereas in a compartment having insufficient lubricant, an oppositely directed drain scoop receives oil from the reservoir.
