The topical compositions preferably further comprise skin penetration enhancers, pharmaceutical surfactants and solubility enhancers, oil phase components, aqueous phase components, emulsifiers, moisturizers, antioxidants, vitamins, lubricants, herbal extracts, preservatives, and other ingredients. In addition to meisoindigo, the compositions may comprise other agents commonly used to topically treat psoriasis. The disclosed methods have been demonstrated to effectually treat moderate and severe forms of psoriasis to a degree similar to a potent corticosteroid without side effects. Preferably, the method involves topical application of the disclosed compositions to affected epidermal areas twice a day.
