Patent number: 11509449Abstract: Disclosed herein are systems and methods for self-formation and self-management of full-duplex communication networks. In an embodiment, a communication device determines whether there is an available self-assignable device-data time slot. If there is, the device selects an available time slot for outbound transmissions, updates its network-status table to associate the selected time slot with a device identifier of the communication device, and transmits outbound device data during the selected time slot of at least one ensuing frame. The device also, during each of a plurality of ensuing frames, makes a determination as to whether to transmit a maintenance packet during a shared time slot of the current frame. If the determination is made in the affirmative, the device transmits such a packet during that shared time slot. Each such packet contains at least a subset of the network-status table.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2021Date of Patent: November 22, 2022Assignee: Rugged Solutions America, LLCInventors: Jason Gossiaux, James Chaput, James P. Roberts

Patent number: 10536858Abstract: A process for sharing spectrum based on signal based shared access (SSA) includes measuring by a primary wireless system, the quality of a signal of interest (SOI) over a shared spectrum band. The process includes transmitting a signal quality indicator related to an associated action message from the primary wireless system to a second wireless system. The process also includes receiving spectrum usage information by the primary wireless system from the second wireless system. The process further includes determining by the primary wireless system whether the second wireless system complies with spectrum sharing band conditions between the primary wireless system and the second wireless system.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 2015Date of Patent: January 14, 2020Assignee: The Aerospace CorporationInventors: Laurence F. Zapanta, Peter G. Kim, Beau Backus, James P. Roberts

Patent number: 9549257Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a system and method of cancelling feedback in a vehicle communications system. The system and method may adjust a phase and a polarity of the microphone signal to produce an inverted microphone signal having a shifted phase. A speaker signal may be summed with the inverted microphone signal to cancel out at least a portion of a microphone signal component of the speaker signal.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2014Date of Patent: January 17, 2017Assignee: Pinnacle Peak Holdings CorporationInventors: Steve B. Hall, James P. Roberts, Samuel W. Grove

Patent number: 8624604Abstract: Apparatus is provided for determining the clearance between a member and a casing surface over and relative to which the member moves, e.g. in a gas turbine engine. The apparatus includes a main waveguide and a reference element that is provided at a position intermediate the proximal and distal ends, or at the distal end, of the waveguide. The transmitter/receiver is arranged to transmit an electromagnetic signal through the main waveguide and receive (i) a first portion of the electromagnetic signal reflected from the reference element, (ii) a second portion of the electromagnetic signal reflected from the casing surface, and (iii) a third portion of the electromagnetic signal reflected from the member, allowing the relative positioning of the reference element, the casing surface and the member to be simultaneously determined.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 2009Date of Patent: January 7, 2014Assignee: Rolls-Royce PLCInventors: Harold Heyworth, James P. Roberts

Patent number: 5499785Abstract: A method and apparatus for automatically jettisoning cargo carried by a dual-point suspension system when a suspension system failure is detected. Three conditions must be satisfied before a load is jettisoned. The average value of the load and an instantaneous value of the load on a hook must have fallen below a threshold value (zero load condition). A threshold amount of the load must have shifted from one hook to the other (dynamic load split condition). A threshold amount of an initial hook load must have been lost within a short period of time (rapid rate-of-decrease condition). For all three conditions, the threshold amount or value is adaptively set based on the actual load carried by the dual-point suspension. If all three conditions are satisfied for either the forward or the aft hook, the cargo is jettisoned. Additionally, a fourth condition that detects whether a structural limit of a hook has been exceeded is evaluated. If the structural limit has been exceeded, the load is jettisoned.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1994Date of Patent: March 19, 1996Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: James P. Roberts, James D.
