  • Patent number: 6126152
Abstract: A pneumatic resiliency unit having a bellows with a bellows first section terminating in a bellows first section first end and a bellows first section second end, and a bellows second section terminating in a bellows second section first end and a bellows second section second end. A support surface engages the bellows first section first end and a backing plate is spaced apart from the support surface. An intermediate support platform is positioned a separation S from the backing plate and attaches to the bellows first section second end and to the bellows second section first end. The bellows second section second end is engageable with the backing plate, and spaced apart therefrom when the support surface is load free. The separation S is preferably variable to change the response of the pneumatic resiliency unit to a load applied to the support surface. Further variation in the response is provided by altering the shape of the bellows or by restricting air flow between the bellows sections.

  • Patent number: 6073307
Abstract: A handgrip having an adjustable length having a handle terminating in a first end and a second end and a first restraining element attached to the first end of the handle and a second restraining element engaged with the second end of the handle, the second restraining element positioned a distance D from the first restraining element. Means are provided to change the distance D between the first restraining element and the second restraining element to adjust to different hand breadths and means are also provided to secure the second restraining element to the second end of the handle. A sleeve is preferably attached to the second restraining element and a detent can be provided between the second restraining element and the second end of the handle. Indicia can also be provided on the second end of the handle to indicate the setting of the adjustment means.

  • Patent number: 5582046
Abstract: An automotive vehicle access preventive device for use with a vehicle having a door closable against a door frame, includes a hook member adapted to engage a post on the inner surface of the door frame, and an outer module adapted to abut against an outer surface of the door. A strap is attached between the hook member and the outer module and is adapted to lie in a space between the door and the door frame. A locking bar, used in a four-door vehicle for example, includes a hook end for engaging with a rear wheel skirt of the vehicle and an opposite end connectable with the outer module. The outer module includes a roller rotatably mounted therein, with one end of the strap attached to the roller and wound thereabout, and a spring rotationally biasing the roller to wind the strap such that the strap can be tightened between the outer module and the hook member, and a restraining assembly for releasably restraining the roller to prevent loosening of the strap.

  • Patent number: 5558398
Abstract: A seat back for a seating system wherein the contour of the seat back is automatically adjusted to the spinal curvature of an occupant by a multiplicity of compressible interconnected plenum chambers which project horizontally forward from the seat back and are connected to a source of air under sufficient pressure to inflate and maintain the plenum chambers fully extended when the seat is unoccupied. The plenum chambers are interconnected by either very small-diameter tubing, or tubing having small-orificed restrictors therein for reducing the rate of flow of air from one chamber to another for introducing a time delay between movement of the occupant and inflation and deflation of the chambers affected by such movement. The plenum chambers are arranged in one or more arrays each consisting of vertically-separated pairs, the chamber of each pair being equally spaced from a vertical center-line.

  • Patent number: 5072927
Abstract: A hand exercising device which facilitates the exercise for physical rehabilitation of a human hand. The present invention provides a hand exercising device which may be adjusted so as to accommodate hands of varying sizes. A moveable fulcrum is also provided which enables the user to vary the tension exerted by the device and, thereby, achieve the progressive exercise and strengthening of a hand. In a particular embodiment of the invention, there is provided an apparatus for the exercise of the hand and forearm comprising: a tension arm adapted for compression and extension exercise strokes, a translatable fulcrum for controlling the stiffness of the tension arm, adjustable grips which accommodate grasping of the device by a hand of a selected size and measuring apparatus for computing and recording the compressive forces exerted by the hand.

  • Patent number: 4944554
Abstract: A seat housing a multiplicity of adjustable horizontal planes connected to a processor in turn connected to an input device responding to a prerecorded spinal profile information of an individual's spinal configuration submitted to the input device. A seat pan, inclinable and pivotally mounted, on rails that permit horizontal movement relative to the back rest is also supported by a viscoelastic layer. Horizontally adjustable headrest is mechanically linked to vertically adjustable arm supports to allow vertical movement of the assembly, matching that of the vertical displacement of the seat pan when the seat is in use.

  • Patent number: 4908627
Abstract: Two miniaturized transceivers, each selectively responsive to predetermined radio frequency (r.f.) transmissions which may be coded, consisting of one control unit and one transponder unit. Transmission by the control unit of a modulated frequency which is received and decoded by the transponder will generate a like reply from the transponder whose round-trip delay is timed and because of the known velocity of radio waves can thus be displayed as the distance between the two units. An adjustable maximum range limit in the control unit will generate an audible, visual or other alerting signal in the control unit when the distance between the two units is exceeded. Such signal is also obtained when the signal from the transponder is interrupted. Low-power consumption can be effected for battery operation by arranging short periodic bursts of r.f. energy between the two transceivers, there being logical means to time-align the respective transmit and receive modes of the two units.

  • Patent number: 4082264
Abstract: An exercise bicycle comprises a penumatic pump that includes a rotating member coupled to the pedals of the bicycle. The air pump absorbs the energy of the rotating pedals and thereby offers resistance to pedal rotation. The inlet of the pump is in communication with the atmosphere and the air outlet of the pump includes a valve restricting the flow of air prior to exhaust. The valve may be adjustable so as to selectively vary the resistance to pedal movement.
