  • Publication number: 20040138521
Abstract: A method and apparatus for treating congestive heart failure by converting the pericardium into a myocardial constraint is described along with techniques for achieving the goal.
    Type: Application
    Filed: January 10, 2003
    Publication date: July 15, 2004
Inventors: James R. Grabek, Michael Hoey
  • Publication number: 20040138651
Abstract: A device for performing the maze procedure through the pericardial space, which includes a very flexible catheter for laying down lesions in conformity with the atrium of the heart.
    Type: Application

Inventors: James R. Grabek, Michael F. Hoey
  • Publication number: 20040064138
Abstract: The invention describes a method of treating a patient's left atrial appendage through the pericardial space. The process takes place through the pericardial space from an access point outside the pericardium or pericardial space.
    Type: Application
    Filed: September 30, 2003
    Publication date: April 1, 2004
    Inventor: James R. Grabek
  • Patent number: 6666861
Abstract: The invention describes a method of treating a patient's left atrial appendage through the pericardial space. The process takes place through the pericardial space from an access point outside the pericardium or pericardial space.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 5, 2000
Date of Patent: December 23, 2003
    Inventor: James R. Grabek
  • Publication number: 20030120144
Abstract: The method of the invention uses a thermal imager within the pericardial space to monitor the progress of an ablation procedure occurring within the heart chamber.
    Type: Application
    Filed: November 15, 2002
    Publication date: June 26, 2003
Inventors: James R. Grabek, Michael Hoey
  • Patent number: 6231518
Abstract: Methods and devices for diagnosis and treatment of cardiac conditions through the pericardial space are disclosed which are particularly suited for performing minimally invasive procedures from the surface of the heart including electrophysiology mapping and ablation, drug delivery, restenosis prevention, stent placement, etc. Some embodiments of a device disclosed herein can also be used advantageously to perform a medical procedure in a selected lumen of a patient's body.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 26, 1998
Date of Patent: May 15, 2001
    Assignee: Comedicus Incorporated
Inventors: James R. Grabek, Carl M. Beaurline, Cecil C. Schmidt, Lawrence A. Lundeen, Patricia J. Rieger
  • Patent number: 6156009
Abstract: There is provided an apparatus and a method of using the apparatus for creating a bleb of tissue of the pericardium of the heart, for accessing the pericardial space, intermediate the pericardium and the heart, and withdrawing fluid therefrom or delivering fluid, including drugs, therapeutic agents, or the like, thereto. The apparatus of the present invention includes a shaft with a first distal end and a second proximal end. A bore extends through the shaft from the distal end to the proximal end. The first end includes jaws, that open and close, as at least one of the jaws is movable. The second end includes a handle, at least a portion of the handle in communication with a mechanism in communication with the movable jaw, such that upon movement of at least a portion of the handle, the jaws can be opened and closed continuously.
    Type: Grant
