  • Patent number: 4452714
Abstract: A reagent and a method for using the reagent for treating a solid material disposed in a liquid medium and having an oxygen-controlled surface condition. The reagent includes a liquid hydrocarbon, a reducing material and an activator material. The liquid hydrocarbon has a specific gravity different from the specific gravity of the liquid medium. The reducing material is present in an amount sufficient to establish a reducing environment around the solid material for breaking the oxygen control on the surface of the solid material. The activator material is present in an amount sufficient to establish an electrostatic charge on the solid material after the oxygen-controlled surface condition has been broken. A more specific feature of the invention is directed to the method of flotation of extremely fine bituminous coal having an oxygen-controlled surface condition. The reagent is useful in froth flotation processes and in bath flotation and separation processes.

  • Patent number: 4372864
Abstract: A reagent and a method for using the reagent for treating a solid material disposed in a liquid medium and having an oxygen-controlled surface condition. The reagent includes a liquid hydrocarbon, a reducing material and an activator material. The liquid hydrocarbon such as mineral oil has a specific gravity different from the specific gravity of the liquid medium. The reducing material such as phosphorous pentasulfide is present in an amount sufficient to establish a reducing environment around the solid material for breaking the oxygen control on the surface of the solid material. The activator material such as zinc thiophosphate is present in an amount sufficient to establish an electrostatic charge on the solid material after the oxygen-controlled surface condition has been broken. A more specific feature of the invention is directed to the method of flotation of extremely fine bituminous coal having an oxygen-controlled surface condition.

  • Patent number: 4274949
Abstract: A froth separation apparatus is provided having a separation container of generally rectangular form having two spaced generally parallel vertical sides, two generally parallel ends and a bottom, an influent feed delivering a suspension of solids in liquid at spaced points along the top of the separation container, a reagent inlet into the influent feed in advance of the separation container, diagonal froth retention screen means extending across the separation container from end to end and from a line intermediate the top and bottom of one side wall to a line adjacent the bottom of the other side wall, froth creating means in the separation container above said screen means, a weir discharge means on the said other side wall at the bottom thereof adjacent the screen means line for removal of froth and outlet means at the bottom of said one side for tailings discharge.

  • Patent number: 4222857
Abstract: A chemical reagent is mixed with the mixture to form a resultant reaction mixture under substantially nonoxidizing or oxygen-free conditions. A continuous movement of the resultant reaction mixture is established through a flotation zone while maintaining substantially quiescent flow conditions during the continuous movement thereof. A first outlet is used to discharge a free or unimpeded flow of material collected at the upper surface of the liquid carrier medium within the flotation zone. A second outlet is used to discharge an impeded flow maintained at a lower flow rate than the free flow from said first discharging outlet. The chemical reagent is composed of a liquid hydrocarbon, a reducing material and an activator material. A trough shaped vessel has a discharge end with an upper outlet means and a lower outlet means. The vessel has a structural configuration effective to provide the continuous, substantially quiescent movement of the mixture through the vessel.
