    Abstract: The present invention provides a sterilization process particularly well suited for sterilizing instruments and other devices having long narrow lumens. Apparatus in which the process can be practiced is also provided. The process uses a multicomponent sterilant vapor wherein one component is water. The lumened instruments are fluidly connected to the exhaust manifold of the sterilizer. A deep vacuum is drawn in the sterilization chamber followed by the injection of pulses of the sterilant vapor until a higher, but still subatmospheric pressure level is reached. When the pressure level reaches a predetermined subatmospheric level, a flow-through sterilization phase begins. It includes successive alternating periods of sterilant flow and the discontinuance of such flow. During sterilant flow periods, there are sterilant injection pulses where the sterilant flows through the chamber and the lumened instruments to exhaust. Each such flow period is followed by a hold period.

    Abstract: A sterilization method is provided which includes the steps of measuring the pressure within a sterilization chamber injecting a sterilant vapor into a flow of carrier gas, introducing the sterilant vapor and carrier gas into and through a sterilization chamber, and adjusting the rate of sterilant vapor injection to reach a pre-determined percentage of saturation limit for the sterilant vapor in the chamber, immediately following the introduction of sterilant vapor and carrier gas into the chamber, in response to the measured pressure. The predetermined saturation limit is selected to optimize the rate of sterilization, while avoiding substantial condensation of the sterilant.

    Abstract: A container for use in culturing living cells includes an enclosable portion, or base, and a cover for enclosing the enclosable portion, a path defined between the junction of the enclosable portion and the cover and a gas permeable filter positioned within the path. Gases flow into and out of the container through the filter. Vapor phase hydrogen peroxide is degraded into water vapor and oxygen by a material associated with the filter to prevent hydrogen peroxide from entering the container.

    Abstract: A method of selectively destroying organisms within a predetermined area is comprised of the steps of introducing vapor phase hydrogen peroxide into the predetermined area at a rate sufficient to cause a predetermined concentration of hydrogen peroxide to be reached while preventing any substantial change in pressure or condensation of the hydrogen peroxide within the predetermined area. The predetermined concentration is maintained for a period of time sufficient for destroying undesirable organisms but insufficient for harming desirable organisms. When the predetermined period of time has elapsed, the vapor phase hydrogen peroxide is removed from the area.

    Abstract: A process for sterilizing and depyrogenating a pretreated solution, such as water, by adding an oxidant selected from the group consisting of hydrogen peroxide and ozone and heating the solution and the oxidant to a temperature sufficient to sterilize and depyrogenate the solution for a period of time, preferably less than 5 minutes. The oxidant is thereafter removed and the sterilized, depyrogenated solution is cooled for dispensing.
